The pre-wars are some of the best handling. The stock has a different dimension than the later years.
That would be a good candidate to send to Les Hovencamp www.diamondgunsmithing.com for a reblue. He has access to the original blueing tanks Ithaca used.
The wood could be a little darker. I found that Minwax "Gunstock" is pretty close to the original color. Ithaca stocks were then finished with DuCo (Dupont Company) Lacquer.
I use spray lacquer as found at Lowes to finish the stocks off. You can either to a matt finish if the gun is a bit older or gloss for a refinish. I build up enough lacquer to do a wet sand and then a buff out, just like you do (did) on a car when lacquer was available. |
