Went to pheasant hunt with my 1940 37(20ga). When trying to chamber the first round, the forearm wouldn't go all the way forward. Thought it must be the shell so tried another but same thing. Noticed the shell is going all the way in the chamber so that's not it. Then noticed that the firing pin is sticking out maybe 1/2 inch from the bolt face. pressed on the front of the firing pin and it wont budge, so got out another gun. After getting home Ive been looking at all the youtube videos on disassembly I can find, but none talk about getting the firing pin out.
Has this happened to anyone before? Do I likely have a broken firing pin? I did take the stock off and can push on the back of the firing pin and it still goes in and then back out under spring tension. Is there going to be something like a cross pin I'm going to have to drift out to get the firing pin out? Thanks |

sure sounds like a broken firing pin. you will need to tap it back so it drops out the way it went in
whether you buy from Ithaca Gun or not, take notice that there is a difference in length between 2 3/4 and 3 in chambered guns depending on date of mfg
make sure you get one of the correct length

There's one on Ebay for $9.00 and one on Gunbroker for $11.00 right now. The one on Gunbroker says it's for a 16 gauge but will fit. On the plus side it's a upgrade according to Skeetx. |

Savage 16,
Not knocking your 37, the fix is an L.C. Smith 16 gauge double gun! Taken care of correctly, problem free for many many generations.

Thanks for the responses. Except for a stubborn, slightly buggered set screw, disassembly went easier than I thought. Only thing I haven't been able to do is get the firing pin cross pin out; don't have that small of a punch. Waiting to hear from one of the GB sellers to verify they have the right version of the firing pin otherwise will get it from the factory..
Skeetx you might be right about the 16's-Im on my 5th 16ga with no problems but this 20 ga is also the oldest one Ive had by far
PCD- You must have forgot that I have Elsies too. Currently one each 12,16,and 20ga. Coincidentally, the current 16 ga is the only one Ive had trouble with so yes even Elsies can have troubles. Happily it was one of the other guns I had along and used it one of the days to take a limit of roosters. |

Sav16,
You had trouble with an L.C. Smith in the field? Please explain what happened.
You know how I like to tease the guys with Semi-Autos and stack barrel guns! I do remember you having some nice L.C. Smith double guns.

had a problem with the firing pin on my 37 made in 1946, a burr would develop on the end and make it stick in the bolt, result was when I closed the bolt it would fire, filed down the burr and it is ok, decided to buy a new pin from numrich, neither one they sent was correct, gave up and retired the gun from shooting trap, it was too old to stand up to that much shooting. |

A replacement firing pin has arrived. It looks to be the same length but built different. The back part is almost a 1/2 inch longer than the original resulting in quite a bit more pressure required when pushing on the back end while its got the spring on and in the bolt. Do I need to worry about this as far as maybe misfiring because the hammer cant hit it hard enough? Should I put any oil at all on the firing pin or is that just asking for it to gum up down the line? Thanks |

Flyingwoof is the name the seller I got the firing pin from on GB. He was kind enough to send me a different spring for free. Was able to get it out yesterday for a test fire . 5 shots as fast as I could pull the trigger and pump so it looks like its back in business. The parts from Flyingwoof were NOS and half the price from other places like Numrich or Ithaca themselves so I would use him again. Thanks to all here for the help! |

I also have dealt with him/them. I had the same results. Good parts and good prices. |
