I’m looking for a 16 target load recipe stepping out at 1165 fps.

In view of reloading component scarcity these days, I have Alliant red dot, green dot. Blue dot, and steel powders.

The Alliant Powder data site and manuals aren't much help for 16ga reloaders.

Would need to know from you what hulls, wads + primers you have plus shot weight you plan to shoot.

I have Federal, Remington, Herters, and Cheddite hulls.

I have Remington, Federal, and CCI primers.

And pretty much every 16 GA wad (including felt) known to man.

Given component scarcity, I am going to recommend some Green Dot loads, since these will use less powder. From my spreadsheet, all 1 oz of lead shot in 2 3/4" hulls:

Chedd hull
18 gr Green Dot
SG 16 wad
Chedd 209 primer
1165 fps
8,400 psi

Fed hull
19 gr. Green Dot
WAA16 wad
Fed 209A primer
1220 fps
9,800 psi
*dropping back to 18 gr. of powder should get you down to 1165 fps.

Fiocchi hull
18 gr. Green Dot
SG 16 wad
Fio 616 primer
1165 fps
8,200 psi

I see pattern developing here with 18 gr. of Green Dot...

Thanks WyoChukar -

These recipes will replicate a Federal 1 ounce load that I use as a target load.

And yes, call me silly, but I see a pattern developing too regarding Green Dot.

Bill I have two 1 oz. loads that work for me at around that velocity. One uses a Fiocchi hull 17 grains of Red dot SG wad and Win 209.
The other I mentioned I found in the 16 ga. manual. uses a Federal hull, 21.5 grains of Universal, Win 209 and SG wad. shot it last weekend and it performed nicely. I have not had either pressure tested only chrono graphed them. Joe

Thanks so much for doing that Garhart. The first load is exactly what I was going to load up a few of to chrono so you've saved me some work. Another member has said going to 18.4 of GD should be 1200fps. Have you gone any higher than 18.0?

Is there any migration prob with the Federal hull/AA16 load like there is in the same load with Universal?

Not sure about powder leakage since I pre flare all of my WAA 16 style wads due to leakage problems with Longshot.

I have not tried any of the real "hot" GD loads, but I have recipes going up as high as 19.5 gr of GD with the SG 16 and 21 gr. with the Z 16. I haven't seen any need to go past the 1,200 fps zone at the expense of more powder, plus now days most of my 1 oz. loads are for my 2 1/2" chambered gun and thus not Green Dot loads.

For just recreational targets I stick to 7/8 oz. loads. They break clays just fine.

The beauty of reloading is you can make 7/8 ounce loads. I use these primarily for target, but have used on live birds for dog training. I also use 7/8 in a 12 bore...

WM Larkin Moore in Scottsdale sells custom loaded 7/8 ounce #7 and 7-1/2 for a 16 gauge that are based on Cheddite hulls and primers. These are low pressure loads rivaling the RST stuff.

Because...Green Dot is more suitable to 3/4 oz. in the 2 1/2" hull based on the data I have. The shorter hulls show higher pressures based on the load data sheets I have and the best two 1 oz. loads I have found for the short hull use either 800-X or Longshot. The Longshot load fits and crimps the best. Putting a 1 oz charge in a short hull is actually a bit crowded and Longshot takes up less room under all that.
