I found 3# of W572 at my LGS and traded them some 209 primers for it. I've been wanting to try it since I saw the loads posted by Hodgdon.
Well I stuffed my RST(Cheddite) hulls with the loads below. It made beautiful 2 1/2" shells with fold crimps.
Guys here who shoot old guns will appreciate these loads. I am very happy with it!

Winchester 572 Win. 209 BP/SPTG16 19.8 6,400 PSI 1,165
Winchester 572 Win. 209 BP/SPTG16 21.2 7,300 PSI 1,220

Looks like good loads for vintage and damascus guns. I'll have to try and find some
W572. Was able to pick up some Universal and 20/28 today.

I am getting almost the exact same thing by using 18 gr. of Longshot with the same components (1200 fps & 7270 psi). This gives people one more option.

I like the pressure of this load for two reasons: 1) It is useful in damascus guns. 2) I can add buffer and not worry about ever exceeding the service load rating of my "modern" Cogswell & Harrison 2 1/2" 16 (fluid steel barrels).

I started using W572 about a year ago for LP and Bismuth 1oz loads and like it. Better than LS IMO.

Where are the published 2 1/2 hodgdon loads for W572? I've only seen 2 3/4 loads.

I have never really looked at 572......but there are some real possibilities for 1 & 1 1/8 oz. loads after looking at the Hodgdon Data.

fn16, That is a load listed for 2 1/2" Cheddite hull and Win 209.

You put in "Winchester Polyformed Plastic Hull 2 3/4"

The components I listed above fit perfect in 2 1/2" hull. You would have to use a filler in the longer hull or the crimp would be dished.

Thanks. So those Win Hulls are Cheddite and there is no PSI/FPS difference when using 2 3/4 load data in a 2 1/2 hull?

I get confused about the views on those two things.

PatrickB,

Here is the truth about 2 1/2" vs 2 3/4" hulls, using the same components.

As many aspects of shotshell ballisitics, there is NO hard and fast rule or outcome. Some loads will show a marked increase in chamber pressure and velocity and some show almost no difference. Without getting into specifics the best way to handle it is to have good data, whether you find it from a good source or you have the loads checked by a lab.

If a person tells you that the shorter hull produces more pressure, that could be true, but it is not linear nor is it in any way a consistent amount.

Bottom line? Use good data, it is the only way to know for sure what you have.

Mark...have loads checked by a lab? Why not a border collie, GSP, or setter? Sniff test? Perhaps they really can smell trouble coming.
