I recently managed to buy ten bottles of Vectan D20 powder from Graf's. I had used this powder a couple years back when i got a good deal on it.
After making adjustments on my loader for a good crimp on RP and Aguila hulls that I had loaded with 7/8oz shot and green dot I decided to cut down some Cheddite hulls to 2 5/8(the length of the RP hulls} and load them with the posted data for 23/4 hulls.
The first ones with 1oz shot were hard to get a good crimp. After consideration for the possible pressure increse with the shorter hull I thought I would try dropping back to 7/8 of shot with the same powder charge of 18gr/D20 and SG16 wad. These loaded beautifully and I loaded up a box of 25 of these as I had done with the 1oz loads.
I wanted the shorter hull loads for my 1924 LC Smith with the short chambers. I took them with me to the skeet club yesterday and was happy with the results. The 1oz loads shot fine with no pressure signs showing up but there was some recoil. The 7/8oz loads shot great with very little recoil! I will be cutting more hulls down ( I have a couple thousand) for more great loads for my elsie!

Good work Byron. What wad are you using?

Brewster, if you read the second paragraph it mentions my load with 18gr of D20 and the SG16 wad. If I decide to load some 1oz loads for hunting I will use fiber wads to reduce the stack height or try cutting the petals off the SG16 wads to make it fit.

Byron thanks for the info. Notwithstanding my oversight (in your third paragraph), you might try the SG16S which reduces the stack height without any alterations, excellent for 1 oz 2 1/2” loads

Yes Brewster I am aware of the SG16S wads but I have several thousand of the regular wads in my latest case and don't plan to buy more. The 7/8oz loads work great with less expense in shot and the lack of recoil.

In that case, cutting down the hulls for an exact fit to the stack is a very smart idea and far superior to using fillers in an ill-fitting long case. Too bad we can’t do that with shoes.

The cutting down the hulls was for the short chamber. I realized that to make 1oz loads work in them I can simply roll crimp the loads rather than fold crimp them. This way I will know which are 7/8oz loads and which are 1oz loads.
The 1 oz loads will be 71/2 or 6 and can be marked on the overshot card while the 7/8oz loads will be 8's.
