Last Sunday, the closing bell sounded on our season for chukars and huns. Once again, I hiked way back in to country that sees no other boot tracks. It's a lot of work, but so worth it to be in complete silence, away from all humanity for some hours completely immersed in the hunt, memories, and breathtaking scenery.

This isn't a remote location teeming with chukars so much as it is a remote location running over with serenity...and that is what matters most on the closer when I know all too well that I will wake up the next morning, look at Rusty and feel bad for him since that the time of year he lives for is once again over. Me too, but he gets so many fewer bird seasons than I do, and this too gives the day much weight.

This is that place where the roads all end in the flat country below, something to ponder when looking at some of the scenic photos. Yep, my truck is somewhere down in that basin while I roam the ridges and peaks. Completely worth it.

It is interesting how dee ja vu works. Last year I bagged a hun/chukar double up there when a mixed covey lifted off (two coveys joined up actually). This year, standing in the same spot, I was blessed with another attempt. I missed the chukar! Oh well, a bonus hun to go with five chukars is more than anybody could ever ask for. It was a satisfying season, even if it took more work to find chukars.

Thanks for the photos. Gorgeous country. One of the things I love most about chukar hunting is its remoteness. I almost never see another hunter. Just miles of rocks and sage, incredible vistas looking down into deep canyons, solitude, great exercise, punctuated with beautiful dog work and high drama. It is incredibly addicting, and my favorite outdoor pursuit.

Post season blues? Not the blues so much as that look of bewilderment and disappointment when I go out the door without him, especially with a shotgun (goose season is still open). Sometimes I take him when I pass shoot geese; he blends in great with cattails now the green fades out and they have turned a golden orange. For the most part, he makes it obvious that he wants to go bird hunting whenever I get near the front door...you know the look...

I will say...

You are my hero, between the snowcock adventures and... (everything else)

I was "there" on that last weekend too. A tad warm for the dog, Saturday blowing like crazy. Found country that seemed like I was the only human to ever be there, and a few birds that flushed too far out. But, the way I've been shooting this year it wouldn't have mattered if they were standing still... Crying or Very sad keep up your writing and photos, please

Spectacular photography on those last shots. A great way to end the 2020 hunting season. Hope we get a few more...
