Alliant just sent me a hard copy of their latest loading data book. The 16 gauge section is pathetic. Just nine total recipes. All are 1 1/8 oz except for one 1 1/4 oz load. No 7/8 or 3/4 oz data at all. Just one Remington SP recipe. They could hardly have done less. |

way back when , in the days when Select was young , I called them and asked what new efforts they had made .... nada ! I was in the process of getting VERY P.O'ed , when Ben said " why don't you just send us the load you think might be good , and we'll test it ."OK , at least that was ok . Sent them the Activ load and they responded lickety split . But , they were making no effort to do any further developement . Same , many yrs later ! much better to peruse the old Lyman books etc , and let Precicion tell your story . |

sneem,
It is a shame that Alliant doesn't publish more 16 gauge reloading data. They have some very useful powders for the 16 gauge. Then again considering the cost of developing data I understand why they don't. Since the 16 is about 4% of the market....
There is data available over on 24 Hour Campfire and there are some that post their tested data right here.
Or you can always come up with a load on your own and have Tom Armbrust or Precision Reloading test it.
I just had this 7/8 oz. 16 gauge load tested at Precision Reloading:
Federal 2 3/4" 16ga. hull w/paper basewad
Winchester 209 primer
16.0 grains 700-X powder
DownRange DR-16 wad
7/8 oz. # 7 1/2 West Coast magnum lead shot
Crimp Depth - .060" - .065"
Crimp type - Fold
Wad column seating pressure - 30 lbs.
Shot String - 6 rounds
Velocity
Average - 1260 FPS
Hi - 1275 FPS
Lo - 1245 FPS
ES - 30 FPS
Sd - 11 FPS
Pressure
Average - 8163 PSI
ES - 1160 PSI
Sd - 470 PSI |

sneem,
If you have a set of components that you would like to try, let me know what they are and I can at least tell you if the load might work and if it will, at least where to start.
16 gauge 7/8 and 3/4 oz. loads are easy to develop because the chamber pressures are generally so low that many combinations will work without bumping up against SAAMI MAP.
Waiting for data from the powder companies is probably a dead end road. |

Thanks. I have some loads but was hoping to be able to choose from more The interesting thing is the one 1 1/4 oz load. Some people were looking for information on that.
I agree hoping to get much new 16 gauge data is probably a false hope. |

Low pressure group has more 16 gauge loads then you will ever need. Not all are low pressure. One of the reasons it was created, none of the powder guys really support the 16, as Mark said, not a big enough market. I don't agree with that, but its all about the dollars. There are a lot of good loads that have been tested on here, usually hunters and shooters that do the leg work for the 16 |

sneem,
Here is a recently tested 1 1/4 oz. load. All the wad column components were bought from Precision Reloading.
I supplied the link for the thread. There are two pieces of information associated with this load. You need to scroll down a bit to find the pattern and velocity tests with a reduced velocity load for turkey hunting.

Some of us old codger's don't rely totally on the internet for information. I have two Alliant hardcopy reloading guides, one from 1995 and the second undated, but obviously later, probably around 2000. Both have abundant 16 gauge recipes for Federal, Rem SP, Win AA-type, Fiocchi and Active hulls with loads from 1 oz. of lead up to 1 and 1/4 oz, using WAA16 (Claybuster clone), Rem SP16 and Active G28 (which, I believe is a current wad from BP, perhaps the SG16????, but don't quote me on that) wads and using Red Dot, Green Dot, Unique, Herco, and Blue Dot powders for a total of 92 recipes. There probably are those on this forum who saved the old Yahoo Xcell data which probably contained these loads. I didn't, but have now entered them in a personal Xcell spreadsheet that is a work in progress, with data sorted by powder among others.
Since I mostly hunt and mostly use AA type and Remington SP hulls and have stashes of SP16 and WAA16 wads, these data are right on target for me. |

I kept the old reloading books and manuals from my early reloading days. The old IMR & Hercules books are my go-to for 16 loads. The Winchester books not so much.
Watching for more old books at the estate sales with guns & shooting supplies (while everyone else is busy over-paying for guns & ammo) to get some bargains.
I still have a stash of AA & paper hulls, but it is getting down to the end. |
