Monday a week ago got off to a bad start. The Jack Russell made a deposit on the bedroom rug that was so big it almost glowed in the dark. Fortunately I avoided stepping in it. Then after completion of my daily devotional, the toilet overflowed. The day had to get better. I drove 70 miles and pedaled my mountain bike 3.25 miles in the dark along a trail through the swamp. Heard zero on the limb but found this one after flydown time.
Gun is a customized Yildiz TK12, 12 gauge single shot. It cost a fortune new. $140 from Academy Sports. Sumtoy Choke, Skinner peep sight and Marble fiber optic post. Mark Larson (Uncledanfan) painted the gobbler on the stock. I'm a right handed shooter so painting isn't visible when gun shouldered. 24" breech to tip of choke. Gun weight 4.25 lbs. Despite finishing the gun's rigging out in 2019, the first day in the woods was last Monday.
Load was 1 3/8 oz. TSS 9. Gil

Glad to see 2021 is off and running for you Gil. I have no sympathy for you though. Another month before seasons open here.

Good job Gil, that’s a dandy of a bird. I leave saturday for a three week Southern tour including hunting in three states. There’s some young hunters that need a little help with tagging birds, and some railings to build and install on the porches. Hogs have found our uplands and the war is on. Open carry of rifles and buckshot in my turkey vest (I have permission from the authorities).

I like the swamp bike concept and have a fat tire bike in sight for my hunting future. If I could just find a turkey lounger built strong enough for my table muscled self I’d be happy sure enough. Perhaps I’ll have a story to share when I get home to hunt Wisconsin gobblers at the end of April. Lotsa hard work but I’m up to the task. I hope my knees will make a few trips up and down a Appalachian ridge to a secret honey hole that grows gobblers for me.

Reno

Nice bird, congrats!
I’m going to Nebraska next week to chase them, with bow and arrows.

James, thanks. I don't need sympathy just better weather. Eat your heart out. Wink
Reno, long time no see. Your knees get fixed? Here's my bike. Tires work fine; not fat, but fat enough. The milk crate is longer than wide and carries all gear, water, PBJ sandwiches and a folding stool to plop down on when I eat a sandwich. It will hold a grown turkey as long as I carry my shoulder bag on the handlebars. I sit on a pad to hunt. Been using a mountain bike for over 40 years. Wore out the other one; repairable but this one popped up on Craig's List 12 years ago. It's a hardtail but lightweight alloy frame and perfect for my purposes. Georgia DNR permits ebikes wherever one can ride a bike which I wish they hadn't. Has to be no more than 750 watts.
df, good luck with your bow and arrows. Gil

Kansas youth opener was yesterday. My 10 year old scored his 3rd 10” beard , makes 3 years running. Single shot hand me down Rossi .410, BossTom TSS #9s. Did some stunt shooting this year, 18 yards. Last year was at 6 or 7 yards.

Cheesy,

Congrats to your boy, I know grown men who have not killed 3 Turkey, let alone 3 in a row! Fantastic stuff. Love the pictures!

all the best,

Spent the last couple days turkey hunting, this time with a recurve bow instead of a shotgun. Called in a nice tom opening morning, and he was strutting and gobbling his head off, but he didn't get closer than 35 yds, even with my decoy. Maybe he saw me in the bushes, not sure. He stood broadside in the open, but I didn't feel comfortable taking the shot at that range with my recurve (although he was easily a dead bird with a shotgun). In hindsight, I wish I had taken the shot. Was stump shooting afterwards and regularly hitting targets at that range and farther. Oh well. It was an amazing experience, and I told myself beforehand that I don't need a turkey, so I'm happy to have counted coup on one with my bow. He's a trophy in my memory bank, and in the end, that's really all that matters. Wink
