I have a Browning Citori with the very glossy Browning wood finish. I want to have it refinished in a satin finish. I absolutely will not tackle that myself.
Anyone use Ahlmans in Mn for that?
Other recommendations on who could do it?

Mark Larson. He’s a member here under uncledanfan. He can strip the wood and do a very nice traditional oil finish.

16'er is correct, Mark is a pro that will do the job you need done. I also recommend Charles Yellott in North Hudson, NY. Both do great work.

Glossy factory finishes are easily rubbed down to satin by using a felt pad with oil and fine pumice stone powder. If you want a semi gloss then use toothpaste instead of pumice. The return trip is a challenge however, as a hard gloss is difficult to restore from a satin finish.

I stripped the glossy finish off of a Browning Superlight a few years ago and applied an oil finish. The job is quite straight-forward. The main thing was to get a stripper that would work on the Browning finish- I have photos of the process if you are interested.

I did just the opposite on my 525 32". Had the shittiest dull finish on a nice piece of wood. I go to trap shoots playing games. See all these Cole, kregoffs, peewzees, with their deep gloss finish. So I got some Tru oil and started to work . About every 5 to seven days I would rub it down and give another coat. Did this for about 3 months during the winter. Thought what did I get into. Could not achieve the clear gloss I wanted. And then one day I went to check on the drying and WHAM BAM THANK YOU MAM. The finish was exactly what I was going for. So I let it keep drying the rest of the winter. Got some gun socks for the barrels & forearm & buttstock. That was 3 years ago and still looks great. But I wouldn't attempt it again. I just don't have the patience again.

American Meet and BigBlue—if it’s no trouble, I, for one, would be very interested in seeing the pictures/reading the directions of how you took that glossy finish off of your shotguns and went to an oil finish. I have several shotguns and rifles with the glossy finish, and I love the guns but dislike that look. I’d certainly try it out on one of my basic firearms first.
