I shot probably 350-400 rounds through it without a hitch then last week I finally shot it at paper to check the barrel regulation and patterns. After about the 4th shot I couldn't open the gun to eject the empties. Finally I got it open by thumping it against my knee with considerable effort and out popped the hulls. The hulls looked OK with no primer drag marks and I was thinking, "Great, I'll probably have to send it in right away for repair." Then last Thursday I shot 75 rounds at 5-stand, and yesterday another 100+ at super sporting without a hint of trouble.

As I was reorganizing my shooting bag and leftover shells I spotted the round below. The bulge wraps all the way around the backside of the hull. It's a factory Herter's, 1 oz. 8's. The plastic leans away from the brass (steel) in the direction of the bulge. Mystery solved.

I believe I read somewhere that the quality of the Herter's shell slipped near the end of the run. Keep an eye on them.

I've had several Herters 12ga target loads with similar bulges, and actually had a RTST 16ga load like that as well. They asked me to send to back to them for research nd gave me some nice premiums in exchange. Never tried it with the Herters shells but doubt they'd be as interested.

I retired a couple years ago and I'm shooting sporting clays more than in the past. With the ammo crunch I've decided to start shooting up my 16 gauge supplies which should last 5+ years and still leave me a good stash of hulls for my light SxS bird guns.

I'd been waiting for nearly a year for a 16 ga. Rizzini BR110 w/30" barrels I had on order, but there has been zero progress or new information. I then became aware of the Rizzini Competition 16 and noticed a couple dealers had one, so I cancelled the BR110 order and went for it.

It's a very nice shotgun and set up for clays with a target style stock (palm swell, etc.) and 30" barrels. Nice trigger, and the forend is slim, round, fully checkered with a black diamond inlay. It stands out in the rack, and just the horse I was seeking! My only nits are the grabby recoil pad (I'm a low-gun guy), and the fiber optic bead, but both can be changed.

Wow! That is one sweet 16! Congrats.

Sold the rest of my factory Herter's to a friend under the condition that he save the empties for me. So yesterday I shot a round of super-sporting with my 7/8 oz reloads and was rewarded with an 89/100. It was high score for the group and the rest had 12 gauges. Wink

Thanks, Mark. The other guys had 12 ga. autos shooting 1 1/8 oz which made it a little sweeter. Twisted Evil
