Just read the ND report. The drought has not been kind. There are pockets of birds according to the report. Not a terrible report but nothing stellar. With farmers cutting CRP because of the dry conditions......could be tough.
I just don't know ND well enough to be confident that what I tell you is gospel, mostly because the weather over the time I have lived here has not been normal/average. I hunt in an area that had birds last year. That doesn't mean the kind of bird population where 6 guys are going to get their limit 10 days in a row and take pics of birds spread across the back of a pickup.
Yesterday I killed those two birds and walked back to my truck. Partially because I am protective of my dogs when it is warm, partially because I wasn't sure how many birds are in the area and want to err on the safe side. Last year this particular area held a covey of maybe 12 to 15 birds. If it is the same this year, I may only hunt there one more time between now and the end of the season.
I have a lot more exploring to do in very non-typical weather conditions. So that means two hunting seasons of information that probably won't be very accurate. |

Mark , we've seen bird pops change yr to yr right at Moo just according to whether they had many crops or not . Sometimes the surrounding farms had corn or whatever , and the water sloughs were almost immaterial ... go figure ! |

Nice to see Rusty somewhere other than on the crest of some mountain ridge. |

canvasback,
Rusty looks great to me no matter where the hunting is going on, especially good in the beautiful mountains. Like to see him retrieving a nice male Wood Duck along a mountain stream some time for sure.
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave
