Super job kgb. Your 97 sure came out nice. Thanks for the pictures. A couple of questions: 1) How fine a finish did you use before bluing. 2) Would the same finish fineness level be appropriate as a prep for a rust blue? Every now and then I contemplate re-bluing some of the old guns I have, or alternatively, having them re-blued by others. It might be a steep cliff of skills for me to dive over.
Thanks,
Tony |

Tony, I didn't record the grit but nearly everything went to 400 and the 97 likely did as well. Some of the rifles I took to 600, especially the barrels. Everything was 320 at a minimum and 320 is what I used on my Lefever's barrels as the Mark Lee bluing formula recommended something to that level. With the rust bluing at 200 degrees or so it's not difficult and material requirements are not bad. I say try it on one of your guns you'd not worry too much about coming out less than perfect, then you'll know!

Dang it. I just missed a 1897 in 16ga while bidding on a auto 5 16ga.
1897 went for $400, auto 5 for $1300 |
