Was surprised to find a bunch of Federal Grand American paper shotshells (in 12 gauge) for sale at the local hunting shop. Had me wondering whether -- given the general materials shortage -- we'll see more paper shotshells hit the market. Even the waterfowl-obsessed folks at BOSS have talked about starting to load paper hulls. |

I doubt a comeback.
I have quite a few 20 ga federal papers from years ago, also some red Winchester and green Remington, before yellow became the standard for 20 ga. I load up a few once and a while. Just gave away a 100 of paper 16s.
I see no advantage in papers except the nostalgia of the just fired smell. |

I hope there is a come back. I love papers for roll crimping. Always looking for 16 gauge paper hulls if somebody has some they want to get rid of |

I like papers, but I do not want them to come back. Fine for break action guns......not so fine when the weather is damp/wet and you have a pump or an autoloader. And paper shells don't hold up for more than 2 or 3 reloads.
Kinda like wanting 1940 - 50- 60 era cars back, sounds good until you remember how much maintenance you have to do.
Make mine plastic thank you. |

And even with break action guns paper shells would sometimes swell enough to not chamber. |

Gentlemen,
For those of us who have L.C. Smith 16 gauge guns with 2 9/16" chambers the old 2 3/4" paper shells were great because you could use them without damaging or over pressuring the the older L.C. Smith 16 gauge double guns. Would love to see some company making both the 2 1/2" & 2 3/4" paper shells once again. I would definitely purchase 2 3/4" & 2 1/2" SpredR paper Shells for sure.
I doubt you will see a big production run on paper shells however.
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave

Gentlemen,
While it is true the paper shells are available in 12 gauge I need them in 16 and 20 for my Grouse, Woodcock and Quail hunting. Especially for my L.C. Smith Pre 13 double guns.
Wish they would provide them in both 2 1/2" & 2 3/4".
all the bst,
Pine Creek/Dave

Yep Roger at Monsoor's in La Crosse, Wi. ordered in a bunch of Federal Papers a few years ago because so many Trap shooters told them they wanted them.
But trap shooters being what they are balked at the price and they sat there for a LONG time. |

Gentlemen,
My understanding is that Roger and his wife are now in retirement mode and only open 2 days a week from 10-6 on Tuesday & Wednesday I believe. I wanted to see if they had any 16 or 20 gauge paper shells. Probably mostly 12 gauge stuff I would guess.
all the best,

Love paper hulls, old cars (or trucks), & retrievers that are lap warmers. Skeettx, I must agree with you about the smell of Hercules/Alliant in paper... |

Yep red dot and federal paper. That smell takes me back to holiday hunts with all the guys in my family, some of the happiest times in my life! Thanksgiving mornings and Christmas eves are not the same! Been over thirty years but that smell always takes me back.
I keep those paper hulls around for the winter months, only my dad knows why. |
