Nasty-G,
Being the Grouse hunter that I am, I carry my shells in my Grouse coat or hunting vest, even when I shoot clays.
all the best,

For hunting I wear a Wing Works vest, I carry maybe 10 shells at a time. Shells go in the front pocket empties go in the game bag. The rest of my ammo goes in a 16 ga. Society Bag I got here.
For Sporting I wear a Bob Allen leather vest. Shells go in the right front pocket. Empties go in a net bag like the trap shooters use.
The rest of my ammo and stuff goes in a Wild Hare Shooting bag. |

Quilomene Upland bird vest right front pocket. It can easily hold 25 shells so I have a good chance at getting my three bird limit (just joking here). I do load it up on preserve hunts with as many as 20 birds in a field. |

A battered old orange vest I bought a good 30 years ago. Shell loops once had elastic but now there's not much stretch left in them. I'll get six in the slash pockets, one on each side, and 2 in the gun, for a total of 14. If I need that many, I.m shooting so poorly I should hang 'em up.
I usually carry 2 sizes of shot, so each side gets one size.
If I need any more - it's the pants pockets. |

Filson strap vest for walk in duck hunts.
Boss shot canvas bag for boat or blind hunts.
Old orange vest for upland.
Small belt mounted bob allen trap style pouch for sporting clays or trap.

Over the years I've progressed from wearing a hunting coat, to a vest, to a strap vest and have now ended up with "dove belt". I buy one of the cheap promo dove belts that comes with 2 slide on shell carrying bags on the side and a game bag in the back. I hate having birds bumping against my butt while I"m walking, so I take off one of the shell bags and slide the game bag to my left hip.
After about 5 years of pushing through the thick stuff, I started to wear a hole in the shell bag on my right hip. I replaced it with the other shell bag I had removed and should be good for another 5 years.
This works great for woodcock and PA grouse and pheasant where the limit is 2 birds. |

I really like my Wing Works vest
It will outlast me. Only thing don't like is that the rear pouch is stiff and climbing under or through barb wire it catches because it is so stiff and sticks out. So in SD take 2 older style vets one for non tox shells on WMA and the other for lead on private land that we access to. Saves switching shells around. The WW vest I use for grouse hunting when I know that I will be doing long stretches.
I have a LOT of vests LOL. Gave up on Filson strap vests a long time the bases of the shells wear holes in the pockets in just a few years.
Still have my grandfathers hunting coat from the 1930's and once it gets cold will wear it a couple times a year.
For clays go back and forth between a shooting vest with reactor pad and belt pouch in the summer. For shooting bag have an older Filson Sportsman bag that is my main staple for carrying ~150 shells.
Bought the Brownells screwdriver set in the 70's. Besides gas Montezuma, Iowa was my only stop driving cross country on a duty station change from West to East Coast. The Magna tip set does not leave the house. |

Great question, no good answer here. Each way I carry them is worse than the next.
Elastic loops stretch loose, shells work their way out.
Vest pockets fall open and lose contents when I lean over to get under limbs, fences etc. And shells can get stuck in them and cause trouble on the next outing.
Snap pockets too hard to use with gloves or when frozen.
Front pants pocket too deep, back pocket too hard to reach quickly.
Leather bandolier might be good solution, but need one for each gauge.
I use a wrist band for rifle bullets with the combo gun, maybe that might work for shotshells if someone made one.
What does US military use?
There might be an opportunity here for some energetic entrepreneur.

I carry them in the elastic loops in my vest pocket, which says something about the number of shot opportunities I get. The vest is a strap vest from Cabela's that I have really disliked the last 3 seasons. I'll likely move to Orvis, Filson, or Final Rise for next season. |

Filson vest loops for upland, Herter's jacket loops & pouch pockets for jump shooting, and plastic ammo box from Cabela's for the duck blind and canoe. Also have deuce clips from Browning that go on belt or suspenders for quick reloads of double guns. |
