I'm an experienced metallic cartridge reloader but new to shotshells, so still feeling vertigo from fallng down this new rabbit hole.
One keg of Hodgdon 600x is available locally (count it, one) and not much else. From my reading 600X seems to be a popular target load and somewhat less popular for field loads, and I've seen caution advised when trying to pep up the target loads for field use due to pressure concerns, especially in sub-12gauge loads.
I would like to do both target and field shooting with one load for 2-1/2 16 gauge inch shells and 7.5 shot. A load stout enough to cycle my 1925 A-5 that won't punish an old L.C. Smith woud be ideal. I'm working on my last flat of RST vintager loads. They seem a bit anemic for field use in my SXS and won't cycle my A-5, so I' looking to roll my own to hopefully meet my needs.
I'm an upland hunter with a close working ESS pup and will encounter ruffed grouse and woodcock almost exclusively.
Opinions and guidance welcome. |

I would not use 800-X, as it is no longer available from Hodgdon. |

I could have been more clear in my original post.
600X is what is available to me at present. 700X and 800X are not. One keg, pricey but affordable.
So my question should have been, if 600X is all I have, can I expect -- with reasonable care -- to make loads both target light and field heavy that will be satisfactory in 2-1/2 inch hulls?
As a corollary question, how well could I expect 600X to work with smaller gauges, specifically 20 and 28?
I know one powder won't do it all. I just want to get through the current hard times reasonably well.
Thanks. |

Welcome to the shot shell reloading rabbit hole, 600x must be a pretty rare bird, I've never seen reload data for it and can't find any reference to it in a general google search. |

600-X is not a cannister powder, not sure where you got it. There is no loading data for it.
Be absolutely positive that it isn't 800-X.
If it is 600-X what company made it. If it is DuPont, IMR or Hodgdon it is probably not a suitable 16 gauge powder.
If you are looking for 7/8 and 1 oz. loads the powders to use are Green Dot, Universal, Unique.
For 7/8 oz. loads 700-X and Red Dot.
For 1 oz. loads 800-X and Winchester Super Field. |
