Hoping you all can help me identify some wads. On the left is a recently purchased Remington SP16. The two on the right were in a bag labeled R16. The one on the far right looks like the SP16, only a little shorter and an extra row of holes.
Not sure how to post photos on this forum so I linked the pic

Looks like R-16 on the right SP on the left and 20 gauge power piston wad. |

The left is an SP16 - the right is the R16 - the middle wad is an SP20.
All Remington wads. |

Thanks for the replies. It's interesting that there were sp20 wads mixed in with the R16 wads in a Remington R16 factory bag as Pap never owned a 20 gauge.
Anyone have any load data for the R16 wads? I have a couple hundred and wouldn't mind using them. |

I have an older IME loading data pamphlet that shows field loads for the R16 howeve I'm not sure all the powders are still available: data was for 700X, 800X, PB, 7625 & 4756. But I can scan it and post if you like. |

I use the R16 (have only few left) & SP16 interchangeably as I see the extra crush section of the R16 is nothing much different than adding a piece of 1/8" felt or cheerio to the shotcup of an SP16 for 1oz loads. Same with CB100 & CB0078-16's, the dome in the base of the 0078 in my eyes equates to a cheerio in a 100.
If you haven't downloaded the spreadsheets from 24hrCF, might be worth you while, there is a bunch of recipes listed there.

Thanks, I'd appreciate the scan if/when you can get to it.

I do have the spreadsheets, but didn't see the R16 being used in any of the hulls I was looking at. I checked some of the other tabs and found it being used with different hulls. I appreciate your feedback and had thoughts similar to yours about the extra crush section, but I'm just starting with reloading and didn't want to make any inaccurate asssumptions. |

I don't quite recall how to do this- we'll see if I figure it out.
Appears I don't. I'll go back through the instructions and post the scans a little later. |

Ah yes, now I remember, it seems the scan must be treated as a photograph and needs to go through something such as photobucket or whatever a new service is. I'll see what I can find or I may be able to e-mail the scans to a member that has a photo service for them to post. |

Coryj, MSM is right about the wad ID. Keep in mind that 16 gauge Power Piston wads are of a diameter (with an additional issue with the powder flange) that makes them most useful in Winchester CF, Remington and perhaps Federal hulls--you may have powder migration issues in Cheddite-type hulls.
I've got about 30 or 40 old recipes for R16 wads in my spreadsheet, but almost all of them involve powders that are no longer on the market. About the only modern powders associated with the data I have are HS-6 (same as Win 540) and HS-7 (same as Win 571), and most of these are for Win CF hulls. if one has supplies of some of the older powder (e.g., 700x) there are quite a few recipes from old powder booklets.
So, the best thing to do may be to just use them interchangably with SP16 wads in one oz. loads if the stack height is suitable. There is a lot more data out there for SP16 wads. |
