I have a bunch of Remington hulls, 572 and Longshot options for powder, BP Sg16 wads, and fed 209A primers. Can I do a 3/4 oz load with these components? If not, what 3/4 oz loads do y’all like?

Are those the only components you have or can get? Faster burn powders along the lines of Unique, 20/28, Universal or Green Dot would be better suited for 3/4oz loads.

For a good 3/4 oz. load in the 16 you would want a powder like 700-X, American Select, Red Dot, Clays.

I have a very nice 3/4 oz. tested load, but it uses the DR-16 wad, which at this time, you cannot get. It uses American Select powder.

Cool - I’ve got 700x… I can get different wads, but I’d like to use the sg16 that I have. I don’t know where to go from here - I’m new at this, and I want to be safe but still explore this 3/4 oz idea.
Help?
Thanks!

I use a 3/4 0z load out of Hogdons with International, DR 16 wad, in a 2 1/2" cheddite hull. some good 3/4 oz loads using Green Dot and SG16 wads in a 2 1/2" hull have been published here also. I have them in my reloading "recipie"notebook

I wish I could help you.

I use the DR-16 wad for all 3/4 oz. and 7/8 oz. loads in everything but a Remington hull.

And you guessed it, the only tested data I have is for the DR-16 wad.

You can use the SG16 wad but you will need some fiber or felt filler wads. The SG16 was meant for 1 oz. loads.

I don't know of any 3/4 oz. data for an SG16 wad in a Remington hull.

Will they sg-16 wads even fit in a Remington hull? Those wads are designed to be used with straight wall hulls?

They do but it's tight, the trick is getting them started, I find twisting the tip of a small plastic funnel to stretch the crimp folds helps.

Perusing the spreadsheets I find several recipes with your components; Rem hull, 572, LS & 700x, SG16 even a couple w/F209a's but all for 1oz. All copied from Hodgdons manuals. Seems to me that if you reduce the load to 3/4oz + a cheerio or 2 it should be OK all else being equal, maybe even gain some speed. Or back the powder off a bit if the reports are too loud.

Sure,

Cheddite 16 Ga 2 3/4" 2 PC Plastic hull

Winchester 209 primer

18.0 grs American Select powder

DR-16 wad

3/4 oz Lead shot

1,339 FPS - Sd 2 FPS - EV 7 FPS

9,480 PSI

This load was tested by Tom Armbrust.

If the velocity is too high for your needs I would imagine dropping it back 1 to 1.5 grains would not be a problem. The load is about recoil free in my 870, Hunter Special and Citori shotguns. Took me a bit to figure out the timing of the 2nd shot. I used it on a reasonably difficult 5 stand last winter. There was a 35 - 40 yard crosser that broke well with the load as is.

I am thinking about trying it with 700-X also. BUT, I am waiting to see if the DR-16 is going to be made again, before spending money on that load.
