What was the story behind these. I have data, even once saw some for sale (though I wasn't in a position to buy at the time). I read somewhere that Fiocchi bought out the company or something? Just curious as I had always thought they were still made just not available in the US. |

There have been all kinds of rumors concerning Activ. The reality is if they are still around, the ammo and the hulls aren't available here.
IMHO, yeah it was an OK hull, one piece with a metal disc molded into the base, so it would eject from pumps and autos and held the primer tight. Activ hulls reloaded well, especially for heavy and non-toxic loads. However Activ hulls would separate about halfway up from the base, using mild 1 oz. loads. I don't miss them a whole bunch. |

they were OK in the day - had LOTS of room in them .... Mark , they are not 1 piece - I thought they were also till one of the old timers said they had an insert . Just cut one apart a few weeks ago and lo and behold , an insert !! The main worry I had back in the day - used them a LOT - they would blow the whole shell above the little shoulder completely out the barrel slug style . Only non 410 shell I ever had this happen to . Mainly after maybe the 5th loading or so .... still love them ! Still have some ! |

The Activs consisted of a tube fused to a base wad with a perforated steel disk molded into the head. The factory was located in Kearneysville, WV. After Kent Cartridge bought the factory, tooling for making the hulls was shipped to Argentina. It's currently turning out ammunition for dove hunters there. When Activ closed down, they threw millions of hulls into dumpsters. Some enterprising employees collected the hulls and sold them for $25 per 500 or thereabouts. I still have several hundred.
I've had the hull separation happen in 12 and 20 gauge but haven't experienced it in 16 gauge...yet. |

I have a ton of Active hulls and wads they make great spreader loads and heavy lead loads . The Servo slug load was a killer in it's day . Wish they were still around great made in the USA product. |

DL ... I have a few 20's left also - like them all ... The 16's I used the most were about the same time American Select came out . Talked to Ben Amonetti , and he tested the load that ended being published . Most of the problems I had with the cases separating , was those loads - right at max (map) . They were stout 16ga loads , so eventually , me and my shoulder moved on !! |

I loved Activ hulls back when my only gun was a Rem 1100. They really fed slick through that thing. Other than that and the enormous capacity, they were just a really cool hull. I never had much issue with tube shoot offs like I read about, but it did happen twice.
The only hulls I had a lot of trouble with were older Winchester 10 ga. hulls with three rings in the brass. Those miserable things would occasionally slip the tube...just far enough to stick in the forcing cone! |

I still have few hundred Actives. I've found that temperatures 20* and below I've had separation. Other than that I've had no concern. Regardless of type of load I've found that a 1oz load is perfect for the 16.
Also I have a 100 brand new primed hull 20 ga still in the bag. I would gladly trade for couple hundred ounce fired 16's if any interest. Bill |

Nope, they were red in 16 gauge.
If I am not mistaken 12 gauge Activ hulls were both red and brown, 16's were red and 20's were yellow. |
