The issue of ingestion of lead pellets isn’t a matter of quantity. It is the acidity on a relatively small number of shot in the proventriculous and the mechanical grinding that takes place in the ventriculous that increase the absorption to the birds system and causes damage to the vital organs, eventually resulting in death.

Thas what it does to rabbits and squirrel to but only in states that outlaw it
By the way your tires will go flat if you use lead. Just saying. Bill |

This post is becoming a little more toxic than lead.

In California, nontoxic is not an option. It is REQUIRED for all hunting and all taking of wildlife -- from deer hunting to dove hunting to dispatching a nuisance raccoon getting into your chicken coop.
I can tell you there are dozens of bills introduced into state legislatures around the country every year to require nontoxic shot for hunting. Most fail, but the trend is pretty clear. Nontoxis shot increasingly will be required. Fortunately, the ammo industry seems to be responding with more and more offerings, though none of them are cheap and they can be tough to find in a pinch. You definitely have to plan ahead for any hunting trip to make sure you have the appropriate nontoxic load for the gun and game you plan to shoot. |

For one thing the shot companies are making a fortune from the price because of the law. To them its a great thing. On the other hand the humane species are fully contaminated with all kinds of toxic chemicals from mexcio.Nobody complains about Waters, Pelosi , Newsom about pushing that stuff. |

After the legislative have put a total ban on lead shot, the next part of their anti-shooting agenda will be to target the use of plastic components (non bio-degradable to start with) as part of their green/anti-pollution agenda. Just takes time to work through the programme, little by little and bit by bit. Any guesses one how long this will take? |

I have a friend of mine that has seen enough wild birds die from lead poisoning that she voluntarily uses non-toxic ammunition for everything, including rifle ammo for deer. She said it was absolutely heartbreaking to watch an Eagle die from lead positioning after it ate a single buckshot pellet from a deer carcass. There was nothing they could do to save it.
Personally, I feel it's less of an issue for non-waterfowl like upland birds, but I get it.
People will always fight non-toxic ammunition as long as it costs more and/or is less effective - or simply perceived as less effective - than lead.

I don't fight the lead or non toxic. I just use lead.
PS I can't dig it up right now but their is a government study on the lead issue when it was first being tossed around about banning it. The study did not turn out the way the friends of fowl wanted . So the gov. Buried the results and went along with the anti hunters to ban lead. The intent was to work towards banning hunting altogether. But wouldn't you know it. The pricey non toxic hit the shelves.
By the way their is also a study on nontoxic shot and game dying from cripples. Guess I'll get off the subject that can't be won either way. Sorry. |
