I was able to find some Winchester 572. Basically looking to replace 800-X since it has been discontinued.
Loaded up a few today and went out and chronographed the loads. I setup my 9000G16 to throw 20.5 grains of Win 572 and one oz. of shot. I DID NOT weigh the charges of the loads that I chronographed, they are right off the machine. IMHO I want the loads that I am actually using not the loads that I am massaging.
The load fit really nice. I only had to increase the crimp depth a tiny bit and I set it at .060" deep. Typical of Winchester ball powders 572 metered very well.
Here is the load right off the Hodgdon website:
Remington 16 ga. 2 3/4" with plastic basewad hull
Winchester 209 primer
20.5 grains Winchester 572 powder
CB0100-16 wad
1 oz. #7.5 West Coast magnum shot
Published Velocity 1,275 FPS
Published Pressure 10,500 PSI
My chronograph results using 5 rounds
Average - 1,263 FPS
Hi - 1279 FPS
Low - 1250 FPS
ES - 29 FPS
SD - 13 FPS |

Looks like a good load, Mark. I've been wondering about 572. Hodgdon's has a ton of loads listed using it. |

I've been very happy with the 572 loads I've used. |

I forgot to add, that this is the first Winchester ball powder that doesn't dribble out of my 9000G16, between the bottom of the bar and the measure assembly!! Yeehaw!! |

Great info . That should be a real nice all around load with that wad, all the shot will be contained in the shotcup, and should not have any problems with powder migration.
I'll bet it will shoot very well also.
Thanks for sharing. |

I, too, have been using that powder for 16ga. loads.
Only wish it could be used for bismuth as well.
Burns complete, recoil is acceptable.

I'd rather be using one of them right now. |

Barnyard Drake,
Why can't Winchester 572 be used for Bismuth? It would be a nice fit for 1 oz. Bismuth loads. |

one of the guys at the club used some for lighter 12ga targets - squibby sounding and he immediately didn't like it . 8#er . Knew I shoulda grabber it before some one else got it . |

Never had any 572/HS-7, used to use 540/HS-6 for 1 oz 20 ga loads. Never liked how bad it leaked from the old mec 600jr. Bought a can of HS-6 last year for mid level loads in the 45 colt, might try it in the 16 one of these days. |

16gaDavis,
572 definitely isn't squbby sounding in the 16!! |

I've used 572 and hard card wads to reload RSI 2-1/2 crimped hulls with very good results.
They patterned well and brought down birds...
I love the powder because it's very forgiving. |

ole_270 -- 572 is not HS-7. Winchester 571 is -- exactly, by the way. |

Have you found much difference in the various suitable 16ga powders when it comes to patterning? I developed loadings based on available components, and to separate shot sizes for ready identification, wound up with 1oz of 5's in Federal shells using 800X and 1oz of 7's in Winchester hulls using HS-6/WW540. There was plentiful data for those combinations, they patterned well in the guns I used them in.
I've read a lot of the experimentation done by trapshooters trying to alter patterns for their very specific requirements, and certain powders turned out to consistently be reliable for increasing or decreasing core densities and/or overall percentages through individual chokes/barrels. 12ga always had a greater variety of quality hulls, wads and data for them, we're a bit constricted in our 16ga world but no reason things couldn't shake out similarly.
I've used 572 in 28ga loading which was new to me. Used only Winchester AAHS hulls, Blue Duster wads and WW209 primers and one brand/size of shot, got very similar results from 572, 800X, 20/28 and Green Dot.
Did anything stand out about the patterns your 572 loading gave you, compared to what you've used in the past? |
