I need to soak some larger shotgun parts with heavy carbon build-up in a container that would be about one pint in volume. What fluid do you all use to remove the contaminants?

Diesel fuel is (relatively?) cheap and has worked wonders for me in the past. The fuel has additives that help deal with carbon deposits in diesel fuel-systems in much the same way it will with your gun parts.

Back when police officers carried revolvers a lot of the ones that I knew would dismantle them and soak them in a Zip-Lock of Hoppe's 9. The caution was that only blued and stainless steel guns were done because it would remove the nickel finish.

I always used carb cleaner to clean the op rods on my SKS's after a day at the range.

A large enough ULTRASONIC CLEANER WITH CARB CLEANER OR GUN CLEANING SOLVENT DOES A FINE JOB.
