I placed an order with Mid South this morning and now have an 8lb bottle on the way. My powder supply is very low and had to get some even if the price hurts |

The weather, stars, and honey-do list have finally aligned and I can go chronograph my loads this morning. I'll update when I have everything tallied up. |

I tested a couple yesterday:
Ched 65mm/Ched, 20gr 572, SG16, 1oz 7 1/2, .050" full crimp
over 5 shots at 75deg
1,234 fps avg
ES 23
SD 8
This is probably the load I'll send in for testing. Looks like a near perfect replacement for unavailable RST 1 oz loads. |

Here are some chronograph results on a few combinations that I wanted to check out for a variety of reasons. Some were 6 shot strings and a few 3-shot quickies. All crimps were 6-fold. Shots fired 30” from the front screen. 66 degrees
Use any of the data at your own risk.
2 3/4” RGL (Remington Game Load)
7/8 oz. lead
CB-0078-16
Fed 209A
Green Dot 14.9
1205, 1211, 1226, 1222, 1222, 1235…..1220 fps ave.
2 3/4” RGL
7/8 oz. lead
CB-0078-16
Fed 209A
Green Dot 14.0
1159, 1158, 1165……1161 fps ave.
2 3/4 Federal
1 oz lead
SG16
Fed 209A
Universal 21.0
1301, 1296, 1302……1300 fps ave.
Hodgdon says this combo gives 1165 fps @ 7400 psi. Glad I checked it!!! Sometimes I wonder if Hodgdon's is actually testing all of their recipes.

1 oz. lead
SG16S (short)
Fed 209A

FYI .... talking to the guy at Hodgdon's , all their loads are tested ... if you read the disclaimer on BPI's site , they claim their's are all tested too !!?? |

double vision,
The 1 oz. load using 21.0 grains of Universal in a Federal hull that you questioned.
I have data from the year 2000 that I shot at Precision. My load was 20.5 grains of Universal, Federal 209A, Federal hull.
Pressure - 10,400 PSI
FPS - 1,265 FPS
You can draw your own conclusion.
Please understand, that does not mean that I think that Hodgdon screwed up. Maybe they did and maybe they didn't. Every now and again this kind of discrepancy happens and it is very tough to explain. |

I should have seen it coming because you gave me one of your 1 oz. Universal loads a few years ago with everything the exactly the same except it used a Z16 and it went 1263 fps. i wrote "peppy 1 oz load" in my notes. |

Out of all of the loads I checked yesterday the first two and the last two are of interest to me.
2 3/4” RGL (Remington Game Load)
7/8 oz. lead
CB-0078-16
Fed 209A
Green Dot 14.9
1205, 1211, 1226, 1222, 1222, 1235…..1220 fps ave.
2 3/4” RGL
7/8 oz. lead
CB-0078-16
Fed 209A
Green Dot 14.0
1159, 1158, 1165……1161 fps ave.
The first load listed is my usual 2 3/4" clay target load, but I had previously used W209 primers, so I wanted to see how the switch to Federal 209A's changed things. The switch to the Federal 209A raised the velocity about 40 fps. I'll do some more retesting with 14.0 gr. (2nd load) because that's about where I want to be for clays in my lighter 16's. Thinking about revisiting a 3/4oz version using the SG20L.
--------
2.5” Cheddite
1 oz. lead
SG16S
Ch 209
572 19.0
1153, 1183, 1174, 1156, 1149, 1180……1166 fps
The 1 oz load above might get sent in for pressure testing. It's right where I want to be for a couple older lightweight doubles. I might send it in along with another stab at a 1 oz Universal load in a 2 3/4" hull.
--------
2.5” Cheddite
7/8 oz. lead
SG16
Ch 209
Green Dot 14.9
1155, 1159, 1169……1161 fps
The final load above was a quick spot check of the 2.5" target load I've been using. It's right where it should be. |

2.5” Federal

Fed 209A
572 20.0
1193, 1200, 1221, 1208, 1205……1205 fps ave.
I think I'll also send this one in for testing. |

That one is on the list of loads to get tested. I’m going to try to walk it down to the 1150 area and get a slower version of it tested also.
I tried the 2 3/4” Universal load again but dropped from 21 to 19 grains. 5 shots averaged 1201 fps. Might try 18 gr. and see how far the velocity drops. |

Just a thought or a question.
Most of the loads you fellas are having tested are already tested, with only slight changes. I am not trying to beat Tom Armbrust or Precision Reloading out of money but........
It's not a real big deal to go from a 2 3/4" hull to a 2 1/2" hull. Unless you are right at MAP with the 2 3/4" load, shortening the hull a 1/4" isn't going to change a whole lot. The SG16, SG16S and the Z2M16 are all just a touch short with 1 oz. of shot in a 2 3/4" hull. So the pressure isn't going to take a big jump.
Not trying to be a smarta**, just trying to help out a bit, especially if you are happy with your chronograph velocities. |

Echoing MSM2019,
If we adhere to the original topic of Win 572, and you research published / tested recipes you will see that many loads are well below the SAMMI maximum pressure.
In fact, most are less than 8kpsig.
So, unless you well exceed 1200 fps you are pretty much good to go, unless you enjoy the recoil.
572 is a great powder for the 16gage, especially for the older guns because many of the recipes hover about the 8kpsi/ 1200fps zones that many of the old guns were designed around in the last century. |
