I'm a double gun neophyte. On an earlier post relating to a Simson double on gunbroker, Matt in KC brought up an interesting point on double gun condition, namely lever being right or left of center.
I own one double, an inexpensive, but fun to shoot, Galef .410 double 26", mod/full, it is very tight and the lever is right of center. I was in the Cabelas gun room this weekend and the, new, AYA 16 I was looking at was right of center.
I think I want a Silverhawk 16. What am I looking for in terms of lever position, and what are the conotations of the lever being to one side or the other. |

As a gun is used the lugs that hold the barrel down wear, as they wear the lever that moves the lug in and out moves as well.
So the lever starts out right of center when new and slowly creeps (left) as the lugs wear (in).
So when looking at the lever you get one hint of the amount of wear. This is not all you need to know to judge wear. There are other things to look for that need to be balanced together to judge the condition of a double gun.
To get a good education walk the floor of a gunshow with an experienced double guy, you'll see all kinds of faults in person and you'll learn to spot them yourself.
