Up in the attic yesterday, found a case of these. Most likely moved during the flood of '11 and forgotten. Woo Hoo Christmas in September.
Found a thread on this forum from many years ago that said they can be subbed for WAA16 for 1 oz loads. Any tip appreciated.
Will have to find the old Lyman manuals. Maybe find a new home for some. |

They are most likely good. But you should check the pedals to make sure they are pliable. To check just bend the pedal over as far as u can. If it don't snap into then your good. If it does break it basically it don't hurt anything but some shooters won't use them. Would not bother me. |

Woohoo indeed, nice find, I have some and sub them in SP16 recipes, especially for 3/4-7/8oz loads, I like to think of them as SP16's with a built in cheerio.
The crush section makes the over all profile very close to that of the WAA/CB 16 wads and I think after cross referencing similar SP16 & WAA16 recipes you'll find they are very close, read; swap-able.
Hodgdens reload center is a great library for comparisons like this.

If they are still supple, reasonably sure you wouldn't have much difficulty selling some on this forum. But maybe think long and hard before letting them go, very useful wads that are becoming hens teeth, wish they we're available aftermarket.
Again, nice find, might inspire me to go up my attic.... |

I have 2 bags of the old R16 wads a most of a bag of SP16's. I need to find a nice LP load, 7/8 oz, for the R16 wads. Do you use these in other hulls beside RGL's ( Ive got several hundred of those). |

They work great in the old Winchester CF hull. |

Any one have a nice 7/8 oz load using the R16 wad and RGL's? I lean toward 1200 fps and under and lower pressure so that I can shoot them in my vintage guns, I will shoot RGL reloads in my short chamber 16's. |

Not sure where your "low pressure" threshold/benchmark is...do you have some Green Dot"? Take look here....

Thanks Putz, that last load listed by you falls into my comfort zone. Ive got lots of RGL's, ched 209's, green dot, and the R16's. I may try loading some up , but have about a thousand 3/4 and 7/8 oz 2 1/2" shells already loaded and 10 cases of factory loads( bought long before the price increase). That load will come in handy. |

FYI,
A friend's dad passed away, so he sold me all of the shot & wads his dad had accumulated.
Looking at the "new" bags, moving them to my truck, they seemed okay.
Loaded up 2 flats.
But when I started shooting them, they didn't have much zip at all. Took a few apart and although the petals looked okay, the petals and posts between the cup and the petals disintegrated easily with minimal pressure.
Seems they had been exposed to sunlight in his shed.
It was no fun taking apart 2 flats of shells to save componets! |

Thank you guys for all the tips, etc.
They are all still in perfect condition. Remembering how I had to scrounge for wads years back to use up the old cans of powder with new wads and hulls that never heard of Alcans, 571, etc.
Only wish is had found them before the body aged another 11 years, friends passing, CRP disappearing, but time marches on.
As one of you mentioned eventually will end up getting rid of them; but; not yet.
When it does come, am thinking most of us old geezers will be gone and the kids still interested in shooting sports will care less about components from 30+ years ago except for may "antique" displays. LOL
Thanks all |

I have never come across an R16 wad, seen some interesting recipes for them though. Has anybody tried subbing an SP16 for an R16? |

Thanks skeet!
I’ve already asked the wife to keep me solid in popcorn for reloading, can’t wait to see her face when I ask for Cocoa Puffs |
