Salish,
Thanks for the WDFW geezer pheasant hunt reminder, and for leaving one out there for us.

grouse_fan here you go
I grew up hunting in NC Pa. with a 37. I have more than my fair share of the 37's now mainly in 16 ga. Shot a LOT of squirrels with them as well as grouse. Don't ever recall shooting one that kept a hickory nut in its mouth, great picture! |

I've started loading my travel trailer for a Thursday departure on my fall bird hunting trip. First South Dakota for a couple of weeks and then on to my buddy's Idaho ranch for the remainder of October. Talked with my buddy last week and he said the California quail hatch was tremendous, so maybe I can see those hundred bird covies lifting off the sage brush ridge and flying down to the willow lined creek again Awesome sight.
Last Friday I ran my three dogs on bobwhites over at a buddy's place where he's raising 20,000 quail. I needed reassurance that they remembered they were bird dogs after the long summer layoff. They all did fine, even the 12 1/2 year old Bode, hard of hearing and cataracts aside. The two year old Dan was showing his stuff, hitting the bird scent 40 -50 feet out and locking up on point head and tail high. I keep saying he's going to make a great dog, but truthfully, I can tell he already is. It is reassuring to know I'm starting out with three dogs that are ready, more than willing and certainly able to do it all. I wish I could say the same thing about their 81 year old handler, but it should be a great trip. |

Riflemeister,
Great news about the Quail, have fun hunting. Your dog sounds great and ready to go! Us veteran type bird hunters are sill around and most times our lives have been effected by our health, hope you have a good season. I am looking forward to my bird hunting this year also. Having just lost a young dog to Cancer I will be down to only one Gordon Setter in the Grouse woods. Pine Creek Shadow is almost 2 years old now and still learning to set Grouse properly. She did fantastic last season, I was very pleased with her maturity and bird finding skills. For the 1st time in over 30 years I will have no Ryman Setter Grouse Dog in the woods hunting with me, Pine Creek Heston is over 15 and is retired now. Loosing the Ryman pup to Cancer definitely effected my Grouse dog Kennel greatly, she was a serious Grouse dog at just under a year old, the time I spent with Maggie Mae in the Grouse woods I will never forget, not a year old and she acted like a 5 year old highly trained Grouse dog. We will miss her greatly. Her beauty drifting thru the Grouse woods was really something to see.
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave

Pine Creek Ryman Maggie Mae, asleep at my feet for ever.

Reifmeister you are a legend, hope you have a great season, really enjoy hearing about your hunts.
Dave , really sorry for the loss of your young companion, I'm sure your Gordon will step up to the mark and I look forward to hearing about your adventures in the Grouse woods.
All best everyone from the emerald Isle, WJ. |

The BOSS 16ga #5 still work if anyone is wondering, and the 20ga, 28ga and 410 for that matter. |

After a week in Maine last week, I flushed fewer than normal grouse and more than normal woodcock. The flight birds are in, and early in the season in my experience. Same was true in the UP and Wisconsin the week before, so I suspect a hard winter is on its way.
Ended up with one grouse, two woodcock (I let most of them fly and could have limited out on them every day), one injured dog, and one slightly damaged gun... |

Saturday 10/8 - hunted in the UP, only hunted an hour because that hour of crashing the whips did me in, I thought I was fine but apparently still working on recovering from food poisoning earlier this week.
Sunday 10/9 - hunted in Wisco, flushed one woodcock and 13 grouse. Missed the few we had shots at. Oh well...
I felt better today, it was warmer, in the mid 60's, so we went slow and it's looking like the little critters that liquified my innards for 4 days running are finally through with me.
The ticks were horrendous, we pulled at least 40 from us and dogs. Ugh... |

Beautiful colors on that grouse Boon. Almost picture perfect with that gun. |
