This map was recently released. The areas we hunt are not affected by any drought.
Really expecting a great pheasant season!

Is your camp open during the January late season?
Went to SD last year for the first time during the late season. Had a good time, saw a lot of birds, but didnt shoot a lot. At that point in the season, birds were very wild, mostly getting up out of range. Planning on going back again this year 3rd week of January. |

I don't have enough interest from guys in coming after Christmas so I close it down December 23rd.
I'm a bit surprised that I have some of the spots open that I do. I guess the economy has taken a toll on some hunter's travel.
All the available spots are prime time. |

I'm currently hunting public access areas around Kennebeck which is south of your place. When I showed up I was a bit discouraged by how dry conditions were, but after two days of hunting I'm seeing a lot of birds. Day one was back to a couple of walk in areas I'd hunted last year and was seeing a lot of pheasants along the roadways. Saw a couple of sharptail covies launching out of fencerows and one covey of prairie chickens on the unpaved roads driving in. One of the walk ins was completely hayed and the other was about half hayed, but had a nice hunt running three dogs and got several productive sharptail points on what remained.
Yesterday I went south of Presho to look at game production areas now that I had bismuth ammo. The cover on both areas I hunted was thick and waist to chest high and made getting to Garmin Alpha 100 points difficult, but I did flush several nice roosters who chose to sit rather than run. I saw quite a few sharptail also, but no ethical shots on them. Must have been a good hatch this spring that survived despite the drouth they have now. A lot of birds to work the dogs on and that makes the trip a success.
We are currently getting rain, maybe enough to green things up a bit. I think it is a good year for birds and condition look like a cool down is coming where you can run dogs in the afternoon too. Good luck on your hunts, should be a good year. |

Thanks for the informative report. Good to know that the drought areas are not a total loss. Last year was tougher due to the walk in areas being partially hayed. We shouldn't have that situation this season. |

I have a cancellation from one of my long time regular hunters. He has just been diagnosed with a bad health issue so cannot make the hunt. I refunded his payment in full yesterday when I got his call. I'm very sorry about this. He is a super guy who spoils his setter to no end. I have listed the vacancy below.
