I got a sample of shot from Roto Metals and Roster's handbook.
I read through and there were not many 16 ga recipes, 0 for any of the components I have on hand, and I see controversy on buffer vs. no buffer.
I also understand sizing down shot to make up for the density difference from lead.
But, again is it necessary to push velocity above 1200-1300?
So, anyone out there that has messed with this shstuff?
I'm looking for a load for decoying birds in a beaver pond scenario.
Thanks,

Hodgdon website had some decent recipes. Lyman, BPI as well.
I suppose it all depends on your components and the species. I also use spreaders on mine when they are inside 20 yds, especially on woodies. I have some Boss shells that I use if I don’t need the spreader. |

Hootch,
I might try one of those ... I just checked, and I have a lb of Longshot.
Have you chrono'd? I've heard BPI pressures / velocities are calculated, not tested.

I have not had any of those tested...yet
But I have used a lot of Longshot in lead and nice shot loads and those loads look pretty sensible to me. |

Lyman's 5th has a section on these that'll give you a bunch of options . |

I have seen posted on this forum by men much more experienced than myself to find a 11/8oz lead load that you like and use that data to load 1oz of bismuth. From experience I would steer clear of any SP16/longshot data in a straight wall hull.

I can tell you that 425gr of bismuth will fit in a 65mm Cheddite hull using 572 and SG16S wads. It will go 1200 or 1250 depending on the charge, with more or less reasonable SD/ES.
If I had to guess I'd say in a 70mm hull you may look at the regular SG16.
Been planning to load some up and test, and a round or 2 with buffer, but haven't gotten around to it.
My lead loads with 572 in 65mm hulls came out quite low pressure wise when tested, so I can't imagine how the switch to bismuth and sg16s would bump that too much. Buffer of course is a whole nuther ball of wax, and I wouldn't go there without testing.
If you have a load tested pls post it. |

I am not sure why folks insist on making bismuth loading complicated. It is very easy.
There are any number of sources that have bismuth data, Lyman 5th, Precision Reloading (email them and ask for the data) and Hodgdon. Hodgdon insists on using Longshot with the SP16 wad in some loads, which is not a good idea in a straight wall hull. That combination does work well in the Remington RGL hull.
Another proven way, a tested way, is to use a good lead 1 1/8 oz. or 1 1/4 oz. load drop it back 1/8 oz. to 1 oz. or 1 1/8 oz. load respectively. If anything the chamber pressure will drop from the heavier lead load.
Buffering bismuth is just like buffering lead, it is going to raise the chamber pressure and sometimes significantly. Buffering is the best thing you can do for a good solid bismuth load. Personally, I don't use bismuth without buffering it. I don't have to use bismuth except on WPA's which makes it easier for me. I have one good tested buffered bismuth load that takes care of pheasants and sharpies and would be fine for ducks. |

For what it is worth consider this. Bismuth costs a lot. If I'm going to that expense, I always go through the extra effort to load with buffer. Buffer makes a difference with bismuth just as it does with lead, so why load a very costly shell and not let it live up to its performance potential.
Also... no, it is not of benefit to load bismuth beyond 1,200-1,300 fps. |

The OP said SG16, not SP16.
After having torn down 100+ loads of Bi in tapered wads with Cheddite hulls, I can agree with your sentiments, but that doesn't seem to be in play here. |

16 ga.
1/2 oz #9 bismuth
1600 fps
Remarkable performance on everything.
Best regards , Nick
Get the velocity north of the magic 1400 fps mark and prepare to be impressed. |

Everything? Hmm. Nerve would think to even try such a light load on a grouse, much less a pheasant, duck, or goose. But what the heck. |
