Question for the target shooters on the forum. I am wondering what are the best loads I should shoot for trap with a .410? I am assuming these should be 3-inch loads of some kind. While the 2 1/2 loads work great for skeet, I find them lacking for 16-yard trap out of a .410 sxs choked with modified and full.
I just wrapped up our recreational summer shotgun league with a third-placed finish with my B. Rizzini 16 gauge shooting a combination of events -- trap, doubles trap, skeet and 5-stand. Beat out a lot of 12 gauge shooters with that 16 gauge Comp 16.
I want to try to compete next spring with a .410 -- just to see how I do and whether I can best any 12 gauge shooters with my .410. I can hold my own in skeet and 5-stand but haven't figured out trap with a .410. I'm thinking stout 3-inch loads may be the way to go but let me know your thoughts.
This is purely a fun recreational league with no prizes or anything like that. Thanks. |

I have NOT found the 410 useful for trap
Try as I might

Thanks, Mike. I've heard impressive things about the B&P Flash, 3-inch .410 target loads but it doesn't look like those are readily available anywhere. I see both Remington and Federal make 3-inch 7 1/2 shot loads which might be worth a try, pricey as those loads are. |

I shoot some of the Rio #6 for skeet/SC works very well. Not sure bout trap. If you're going to use 410 for trap you best shoot quick. |

Just for grins the guys shoot trap using 3" .410's-7,5 shot and limit themselves to the 18 yd line. |

I'll look my load up and get back to you. Just for your information. I won 3 out of 4 rounds at games last night at trap. Shoot from the 18. 10 clay targets. 10 guys on the line. Had two shootoffs from the 27 yard. Won one and lost one. The other two games I won straight out. All 10 targets broke on both rounds and know shoot offs. Lot of fun.
Their is one club across the Stateline in Illinois that shoot strictly 410's. Few of those guys drive over two our club to shoot when we mix 410's with our regular games. |

Shoot your reg 21/2'' shells with 8.5 shot .... use the same load for skeet . The trick is getting a heavy enough gun - you still can shoot fast enough . Forget what load you are shooting - same mentality as 410 skeet ! We used to have a league when the Browning 42's came out . Weight the gun out and it was a hoot . combo handled 16yd OK . |

3/4 oz of #8 1/2 hard shot 13 grains of 2400 3" Remington hull Winchester HS 410 wad CCI or Win 209 I use a Briley extra full choke in my Beretta 686. It smashes targets a long way out The Lyman 5th edition shotshell handbook has some good 11/16 and 3/4 oz 3inch data . #9 shot patterns well and breaks target in warm weather but most times 8 1/2 hard shot is the bomb #8 shot works well . I don't load any larger shot in the 410. You need choke with the 410 to make it work at longer range. |

Best I ever did with a 410 at trap was back-to-back 8's. At least I was consistent! |
