So, I'm following a recipe from Shooting Times.

2-3/4,Cheddite,6-Point,Ched209,Win 572 21.6gn / 1oz #8,SG16

The crimp dishes pretty badly, and it takes a decent felt spacer to level it out.

I measured out to the decimal on both charge and shot to be sure.

Anyone have this recipe or similar and have to still use a spacer in the wad?

I went through all the 572 data on the Hodgdon site and the only hull that 572 works in without a filler wad, in a 1 oz. load is the Remington hull with the CB0100-16 wad.

W572 is very dense. Everything fits a lot better with W572 in Cheddite/Winchester and Federal hulls and the SG16 wad and 1 1/8 oz. of shot.

W572 doesn't really like cold weather either, it's the first powder that I've used that I haven't gotten a really good cold weather load with.

Honestly, it's been a bit disappointing, especially since Hodgdon is touting it as a great 16 gauge powder.

BTW, I don't use filler wads in 1 oz. loads. It takes a load that should fly through a progressive reloader and slows it down to a crawl.

Seems like 572 might be ideal for 1 oz in 2 1/2” hulls, with the SG16S wad. Just a thought.

Certain you have the SG16 and not the SG16s?

I shoot a 5/8oz 2.6" load in Ched's w/an SG16 that dishes if I seat the wad with any force. My cure for it is to not seat the wad completely, quit when the wad "clicking" past the (MEC) wad fingers is heard. Then let the shot drop and crimp set the wad. Sounds splitting hairy but it works for that load.

Guys,

Thanks for the responses...

I am tending toward the 2-1/2" roll crimper route.

Originally got 572 for some fiber wad spreader loads for my Sauer F/XF gun. For my hunting it does fine. Working up now something for skeet with my M/IC Dreiling and ran into this.

Just trying to get the most out of my 572...

Thanks for the great suggestions!

I've used and tested it in 65mm Cheddite hulls. It fits fine even with the regular SG16. At 1220 fps I'm getting under 7000 psi from Precision. It works just awfully low on the pressure for a good consistent burn. I didn't test it in the cold much but I can certainly believe it isn't great.

With 2 1/2 shell availability being what it is, and powder availability continuing to be a problem, 572 will make viable shells. Just not perhaps the best if you had more choices.

Brewster,

My Chedites are measuring 2.70" from rim to lip. I'm using calipers, so it's pretty accurate.

Still after measuring each load, it dished.

Though about shortening, but probably easier to go to 2.50 and roll.

3Drats,

Probably easier to go to 2.5 and fold crimp......and you will get more life out of the hulls.

I've got a filler I use inside the pedals for 1oz. Leave the filler out and it perfect for 1-1/8. But I don't have much use anymore for 1-1/8 except for hunting. I use 1oz for all my clay shooting.

A thin 28-gauge overshot card dropped on top of the shot before the crimp starter station will take care of your problem.
