I just bought a box at the Runnings store in Bismarck, to find out what the Aguila's are.

They are exactly the same inside as the purple Herter's shell that Cabela's sold a few years ago. The wall thickness on both is 0.025".

In other words, it is most likely a Cheddite hull.

Aguila hull is on the left, Herter's on the right.

FWIW. The primer looks like a Cheddite. The wad is almost an exact copy of the Remington R16 wad except that it is larger in diameter at 0.660" and the Remington R16 is 0.635". he Remington also has ribs on the shot cup petals and looks like it comes out of the mold slit. The Aguila copy doesn't have ribs on the shot cup petals and was definitely slit after it was molded.

Remington R16 wad is on the right.

The 4 small holes under the shot cup on the Aguila wad are there, but are not as defined as the R16 wad. In general the Aguila wad is not made as nice as the R16.

When I get a chance I will pattern and chronograph these loads.

FWIW, I bought a flat of these for skeet, they shot well out if the box, my score stayed consistent. They are going on a second reload of my one ounce 1350 load, a few funky crimps, some splits and totally trashed 3 hulls. By comparison, I’ve put my purple Herters/Cheddite hulls in rotation for my practice loads, they seem more robust, but are only shooting 3/4 oz.

I wonder if the base diameter of the wad they're using is larger than an R16. You typically get a fair bit of powder migration with Remington R16/SP16s in a Cheddite type hull.

I gave the numbers above. The Aguila wads are larger in diameter than an R16.

Interesting stuff, thank you MSM2019 for sharing this study. Dreaming out loud, it would be great to see these wads available in the market, an R16 clone w/0.660"d would be welcome on my bench.

I agree, that wad would be a welcome addition.
