Hey guys, anybody have a 16 gauge recipe for a low noise load for shooting the first birds over a pup? I don't have a 410 or 28, but I do have most everything to load 16 ga. 5/8 to 3/4 oz and barely enough to kill a bird at 20 yard would be great!

Take a look at the ‘Generic Load Data’ section of the spreadsheets. I’ve loaded the unique generic load with card stacks and a roll or Hardin crimp. It’s pretty low report volume.

I loaded a federal hull, win209, unique, hard card+two spacer cards, 7/8oz #8, and OSC. Dropping a chukar at 25-30 yards reliably. Don’t have the data in front of me right now, sorry.

Longer barrels always better. Also if you can recruit a shooter, have them stand a bit off the dog and in front. If the bird backs around, have them report away from the dog and not over the dog. This allows you to focus on the dog better too. If you have two shooters, be sure to let them know only one shot per bird to start, so work out shooting scenarios beforehand for best results.

Well, that's the other problem. I can't seem to get into the spreadsheets. 24 Campfire never lets me in. I used to have them, still have no-tox, just not the rest of them.

Long Chamber inserts to shoot 410 from a 16 worked well for me training young dogs

What powders do you have on hand?

Hodgdons reload data center has a bunch of loads listed in the 1100-1150 range. Click on the 16ga Ched 2.5" drop options. With such moderate/low pressure ranges, the couple employing the DR16 I wouldn't hesitate to sub in the CB16-078 in those.

I've done 1/2 ounce shot and 8 grains or red dot, or similar fast burning powder, and lots of filler wads in 16g. Could also use those 1 3/4" Aguila shorty shells in 12g, they're not very loud.

Use fiber wads. That will cut the noise significantly.

I have been loading 5/8 oz. lead loads in 2 1/2" RGL hulls. 13 gr. of Clays or E3, SG 16 wad, Cheddite or Win primer. I don't have my load data book handy (it's in the reloading room) but these are mild loads in the 1,200 fps range with mild pressures. They kill birds like lightning out to 25 yards, further with a mod or tighter choke. Recoil is tame and noise is mild.
