Wondering if anyone has/uses one of the newer Wingmaster 16g that came with factory RemChokes? I know they were built on a 12g frame but even the 12’s aren’t all that heavy. I’m thinking could be nice gun to use with heavier waterfowl or upland loads and clays.

I truly love mine. Even with the extra weight with the slug barrel it is a true 16 combo. It makes my heart happy even with a few extra pounds.

Good to hear! I remember guys bashing them bad when they came out because of the weight and being built on 12g frame but I have to think they can’t be that bad. They sure seem to sell fast whenever they pop up on auction sites.

All 16 gauge 870 and 1100 shotguns were made on 12 gauge frames. The big difference is the barrel of new vs older. The older barrels have a pronounced taper to them which made them lighter and a bit less muzzle heavy.

That’s cause the 12s are built on a 16 ga frame. As are the 16s.

So the frame isn’t the issue, it’s the barrel. I always thought the Remington ‘Light Contour’ RemChoke barrels were supposed to save weight. Either way they seem like a decent package to me.

Well the 'light contour' barrel missed the 16 gauge.

I've never handled a "newer", remchoked 16 ga Wingmaster. My understanding is that they just used the same barrel blank as the 12 ga, but drilled a smaller hole in it, resulting a thicker wall and thus heavier barrel.

Correct, the original 12 gauge frames from 1950 were actually built on the same frame as the 16 gauge 11-48. This is why the original 870s were lighter than most other 12 gauges of the time.

The reason that the 870s of all gauges became heavier was due to the requirement of steel shot for waterfowl hunting. The original barrels were much lighter in contour and non-ribbed.
