just picked this up at a local gun show, dated 1864, barrel cut down to 32 inch, anyone come across anything like this?

Just recently read a story about passenger pigeon shooting and something was mentioned about muskets converted to shoot them. Kinda cool thinking about how the old guns were used. I was researching this 1870 shotgun and found the short story.

Mie is a Civil war parts gun best we can figure . 32'' barrels and weighs about 5# . Both me and wifey have shot it(50grns FF and 3/4 oz shot I believe ) . Not a lot of velocity to that load , but we can say we shot it ! ( almost no markings on it - only a couple , wifey went over it with a magnifying glass to no avail !)

We've had one in the family since a family member got it as a kid on the prairie in the Dakotas circa 1900. It came to my father during WW-II and he put it back in shooting condition. I often shot Doves with it during my college years. After getting my first ten with a modern gun I'd use the muzzle loader for the last two. Teaches one a lot about keeping your swing going!!

Winchesters and Colts be damned, these were the firearms that "won the west" as they were what the average sod buster could afford! Years ago at one of the Remington Society Seminars one of the presenters showed surviving shipping records from Schuyler, Hartley, Graham showing them shipping thousands of the converted Springfields west for every Remington revolver or rifle they shipped.

finally shot it, tried 50, 60 and 70 grs of ff pyrodex, #11 cap and 1 oz of #8 shot, the 70 grs felt like a reg shotgun in my shoulder and had the best pattern, lots of fun and impressive for a 160 yr old gun

Kennedy ... we guessed at and stopped at 50grns just because of the rusted barrel and it is sssoooo light . A long barrel cardboard thin . That load went into a gallon jug , but didn't go out the backside . Wifey was thrilled we could just shoot it at all ! She felt like Daniel Boone's long lost little girl !

I have the exact same muzzleloader. Researcher, from your ad it seems they were commercially made and sold in cases of 20. Where did that ad come from. Thanks,Jim
