Went shooting yesterday, in advance of today's storm. The 1891 gun worked flawlessly, even if I didn't. I had accumulated some shells specifically for it's use (down at Scheels in Colorado Springs last Sunday...nice operation there, a Christian company evidently). My convalescence (needed to heal up from a bad fall over Christmas) has left me a little weakened and it showed during my shooting (I was sloppy and ill-timed...oh well). It was sure nice to get out though.

I shot two guns with very different weights and dimensions, which probably didn't help either, but both worked beautifully. Bring on Whittington!

What a difference a day makes, eh?

Thanks Mike! Yea, they help protect the Damascus finishes from my sweaty paws...

We're supposed to get something like 20-inches of snow before all this fun ends. If I could, I'd be happy to share some of it with you folks down there.

All stocked-up on the proper shells now, if only I can get-shed of this walking cast/boot and these crutches. I'll see my sawbones next Tuesday...

I was thinking of you Dave, every time I checked on that 3-position safety when shooting yesterday.

In very controlled conditions (such as on a safety-conscious and very "high-end" gun range) and with competent and very gun-safety aware fellow shooters...that 3-position safety was quite useful actually. I would even call it an "asset" (which is something of a development for me). You really can teach an old dog new tricks.

Lloyd3,

Thank you sir for the very nice complement, my newly acquired 1929 L.C. Smith 16 gauge gun has the 3 position safety. The new Silver Snap Caps I ordered from CSMC arrived today, and as I was inserting them into the gun, I was thinking about our posts here on the 16 forum. It is nice to have other sportsman to talk with about our L.C. Smith guns, right down to our 3 position safeties. Thank you sir for the nice educated conversations we have about our guns, I truly enjoy them.

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave

IMO there is nothing like a Classic American L.C. Smith Double Gun!

That's a beauty. Never saw a Smith like that. What grade is it?

Purple16,

The gun you are looking at in my post is an Eagle Grade L.C. Smith, one fine double gun. Made from 1912 to 1939, there were 562 of them made. There were only 51 of them made in 16 gauge, during that time. Beautiful guns for sure, known for their side lock stippling and they're Pheasant and Mallard Duck side lock engraving with their Eagle engraving on the opening lever. The only L.C. Smith guns ever done with stippling engraving, they are a prize possession in any L.C. Smith gun collection

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave

Pine Creek Dave:

Chatting with you is getting expensive. I've been ogling LC Smith hammer guns of late and am slowly learning about their particular histories. They're almost as confusing as the rest of the Elsie legion-of-guns (bar-action, back-action, Syracuse, Transitional, Fulton, pre & post 1913...eek!). I love my dainty and old (1866) English hammergun to hunt with, but I'm a bit concerned about using it much on targets. All the Smith hammers I've seen so-far are pretty substantial by comparison. Any tips for me here?

Elsie "F" Grade Hammergun, guessing this one's pre-1898?

Lloyd3,

I had a 1913 F Grade L.C. Smith Hammer Gun for many years, it served me quite well, both hunting Grouse and shooting Clays. We used the correct size 2 1/2" RST shells in her and she held up quite well. Never one time did I repair her, used the SpreR #8, 7 1/2 & 6's in her all the time. Great Grouse gun, I even shot a true double Grouse with her, with my SM Grouse Dog. Gifted the gun to another Grouse hunter, he helped me restore my log cabin. I wish I had the gun back, have never been able to find another one like it. Yes good quality double guns are usually expensive, purchasing them is a good habit to acquire.

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave

Pine Creek Sampson our incredible SM Grouse Dog with his true double Grouse, taken with the L.C Smith 16 gauge Hammer Gun. Memories to last a life time.

Hello Mike! More snow here today (wish I could ship some your way). Still another week in my crutches (saw my sawbones last week) and probably "the boot" for a while after that. Hope to be all healed-up for the festivities in Raton.

I think I might have another Smith coming soon too.....

Lloyd3,

Nice pick up, no problem with the bad influence I already have many wives who think I am a major bad influence on their men. You will just be another addition to the long list!
The ladies who hate me for influencing their husbands to purchase gun dogs and fine shotguns are numerous, I probably have wanted dead or alive posters on me, thru out a few countries now.

Enjoy your latest aquition, she is a beauty!

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave
