Be careful while Grouse hunting, take it slow and easy, lots of Grouse hunters have been injured down thru the years. Long go I busted 3 ribs and cracked 3 others on a snow covered bolder filled hillside here in Pa. I replace my boots every time they start to wear now, for sure!

Dave, they had originally said it would only be for a few years. I haven’t bought a PA license in a few years because of this. That’s when I preferred to hunt there, after Christmas.

Yes you and a lot of other Grouse hunters used their Christmas vacations to Grouse hunt in the cold snowy weather during the Christmas season, and prayed for a few bright sunny snowy days to get a few birds. I do believe if the PGC would have given us the Christmas holidays, to Grouse hunt there would not be the very hard feelings that are going on now. We have so few Grouse hunters left that in no way could it ever effect the over all Grouse population.

Well the story I got was there was a small number (under 10) that they were concerned about. Supposedly they were limiting on every hunt, and would hunt several days a week. I forget the woman’s name from the PGC who got this whole closure going but those words were straight from her mouth. A good friend of mine was standing next to her when she said it. It’s hard to believe someone could be that successful at grouse hunting but apparently these guys were that good.

Yess some of us old time Grouse hunters are very successful at grouse hunting, however what she failed to mention was that those same old Grouse hunters do not over shoot covert locations and do teach young Grouse hunters to never do so.
Our greatest respect for the Grouse we hunt is imbeded in our life long traditions to preserve and help increase the over all Grouse population. Not to endanger it in any way. I am very familiar with many old time Grouse hunters, who hunt avidly, and pass on our traditions to all that we teach. No doubt there are a few Grouse hunters who violate this practice, however seasonal laws should be made for the majority of Grouse hunters, not for those who violate our Great Grouse hunting traditions.

A man should hunt Grouse with a fine double gun that is for sure, unless he does not have the means to purchase one. Lots of guys Grouse hunt with pump guns and eventually purchase a fine doublel gun when they can afford one We do a lot of teasing here about hunting with the right guns, a man should alway purchase the highest grade gun he can afford to own.

Very true Dave, it could have been his Stoeger Coach Gun. with his bird kills knotched in the stock. You have to know Pumpgun he hunts in tennis sneakers and his bird dog of choice is a pitbull/husky mix. The dog ranges like a son of a gun but won't point worth a darn. He does retrieve the neighbors guinea hens like a champ but the only thing left are wings and a beak.

Don't be too-hard on Pumpgun here, as most of the world now shoots plastic autoloaders.

Heck...I always have my former father-in-laws beat-up 870 Express in the front seat of his (now mine) ancient Ford PU up in Nowhere, MN (in-case some "bigger iron" becomes necessary). I wouldn't want to have to carry it very-far but...for roadside executions the big 12s are very efficient. I even used one in central South Dakota back in December (in areas where non-tox shells were required) so there really is "a time and a place" for these things too.

"Grace" isn't always the goal (even when it probably should be) and perhaps his situation is desperate enough that this is his only option? "Black & Plastic" is sometimes all that poor and backward folks (the underserved?) can muster. In the world that I grew-up in (piss-poor & ignorant Appalachia) that Turkish autoloader would be a mighty-fancy rig (it even has it's own matching strap for easier carry, making hunting while drinking beer a far-more feasible option). Discerning tastes in firearms are sadly...simply not universal (& more's the pity!). Bless-his-heart if that's what we have going-on here.

Also, that poor little ground-sluiced bird looks pretty "wet" to me, I sure hope he at-least did something constructive with it? Wasting game is both a sin and a crime (much-like incest), even in rural Maine.

Actually... I suspect he's really only doing a little "bomb-throwing" here, just to stir-things up a bit. I have to suppress that impulse every once in a while myself.

Pumpgun has quite a nice collection of guns but his traditional family gun is a 12ga Marlin Goose Gun with 36 inch barrels. You are right Lloyd he usually ground swipes his partridge or pots them out of a tree. In Maine Partridge are shot on the ground and Grouse in the air. Don't know if he has ever shot a Grouse.

Nothing wrong with a little bomb throwing every now and then to liven things up .On a last note in the many years of skeet shooting with Pumpgun I think I've beat him once, can't he work that bolt on the old Marlin.

Always looking at fine guns here how about some pictures of your old beaters?

Here is a nice hand made 1800's 16 Gauge J. P. Sauer Grouse gun, for your viewing.
One of my favorite Grouse guns. Nice light gun with very high quality French Walnut wood, carries and swing like part of my arm. 16 Gauge gun on a J.P. Sauer 20 gauge frame, one sweet Grouse gun.

My take on it is that a man should hunt grouse with whatever gun a man is inclined that day to hunt grouse with...for me it would be one the model 12's with #6 high brass while wearing a buffalo plaid Woolrich coat. If you prefer a $20,000 double and tweed knickers with a jar of Grey Poupon in the pocket have at it...
