Okay folks, I've been absent a lot-it's a busy life, especially when bird seasons are still on. But...I notice many requests for 2 1/2" data, and I have a lot of it compiled from various sources. So, here goes. I'll start with my favorite all around 1 ounce load, after which I'll go from light to heavy. All data is for 2 1/2" 16 ga. hulls. Fold crimp, unless noted otherwise.
Cheddite hull
1 oz. lead
SG 16 wad
18 gr. Longshot
Win 209
1,200 fps
7,270 psi
NOTE: I do substitute the Claybuster wad (pre flare the powder cup) in this load and it crimps great. I also use this same load with buffer-pressure does increase but will still remain below 10,000 psi, so I haven't sent buffered versions in for testing.
5/8 oz. lead
Rem game load hull (RGL)
13 gr. Clays
R16 wad
Fed 209A
1,280 fps
9,650 psi
NOTE: I have been substituting the SG16 "short" wad and crimps are good. Milder primers okay.
5/8 oz. lead
Cheddite hull
13 gr. E3
SG16 "short"
Chedd 209 (CX2000 is same)

Yes, Thanks for doing this. I remember when you posted the first load. The closest bushing I could get was 17.5 but I used a ch209 which generally is regarded a little hotter than w209. My chrono said 1012,992,1021,1011,1039. Never revisited it. |

Savage16, I've never chronographed the 18 gr. Longshot load, but have long suspected it was slower than the published data. I am curious if you roll crimped. To my knowledge, this is a fold crimp load and I use it as such.
However, it has taken a ridiculous amount of birds for me and the recoil is very light. I used it with great success on late season sharptailed grouse...and those aren't close shots. At this point in life and experience, I have concluded that people place way too much stock in the whole speed thing.
I've never heard that the CH 209 is a hotter primer than the Win 209 and the data I've studied suggests that most of the time it behaves a little "cooler"-but as is always the case with primers, this varies by powder and even individual recipes.
At 7,280 psi, I imagine you could add a grain or two to that 1 oz. recipe and send the load in for testing. |

Thanks for all the time you gave to input these. I appreciate it and have downloaded them.
I’ve used the following recipe of yours with 15.9 gr of Int. for 1150/6200. Another great load. (We just need to get International back.)
3/4 oz. lead shot
Cheddite hull
15.3 gr International/ 16.6 gr. International
DR 16
CH 209
1,100 fps / 1,200 fps
5,700 psi / 6,700 psi |

I have edited the introduction to make mention of these being fold crimp loads as far as any source has indicated. The one known roll crimp load is noted. |

One of these days I'll borrow my friend's chronograph and confirm actual velocities, mostly out of curiosity. I used that 1 ounce long shot load in both buffered and unbuffered versions the other day on our chukar and hun closer. The huns were jumpy as always. I shot some pretty far birds and they went down without a fuss, so I probably shouldn't waste my time on it since slow loads actually kill just as well as fast loads...but there is that undying need to know just how fast or slow this recipe is. I also suspect that the buffered version may exhibit a slight increase in velocity due to higher chamber pressures. |
