Very nice JP Sauer Dave!

Griffon: I do have a few hunting pumpguns here, a 16 M12, a southpaw 870, what else...a double-hump 520 and even a flat-top 520 too. The M12 is usually the one that gets the cornshucker nod for upland work.

No tweed knickers, when they get wet you'll chaff something awful. Pumpgun you've got one vote for your Marlin.

Just gotta love a Maine sense of humor! It’s something like Swamp Yankee with an extra dash of Deep Woods Off. Must be all those big mosquitoes…

My partridge/grouse hunting mentor was from Howland, ME, and ran a 12 ga Weatherby O/U, with an 1100 for backup. He teased me for shooting my Flues, especially when I missed which was often.

The best (and probably most ethical) bird hunter I hunted with ran a Model 12. I only saw him miss once on a woodcock, and boy was he mad about it, which made me laugh because he was normally so composed. He was from CT.

I love the banter in this thread, kinda reminds me of duck hunting with a bunch of buddies in a blind. The only time it stops is for the first bite of food.

Bring what you like, run what you brung….

Never mastered a pumpgun Lloyd. Me shooting a pumpgun was a waste of perfectly good ammunition. Started early on with doubles and stuck with them.

Very nice gun Dave although I'm seeing a pattern here. I'm noticing in your gun pictures they are always adorned with a grouse. The birds always look very similar. Are those different birds or a taxidermy bird you use for photo ops?

That’s a taxidermy bird the Dave hit with his Explorer. It was a fine shot. He’s never actually killed a grouse. 😂

Griffon: I grew up in a pump gun world, but I've evolved into a doublegun guy.

There is a place for both, however, in my battery of firearms.

16gaDavis,

We simply do not have enough experienced Grouse hunters any more to put pressure on the PGC, it is a sorry situation for sure.

Why do you have to have experienced grouse hunters to put pressure on PGC?
Why can't just regular grouse hunters do that?

Shorebird,

In reality we just do not have enough Grouse hunters left in any experienced level to put pressure on the PGC to actually influence them into making the changes necessary for good forest management let alone correct Grouse seasons and times. Way to few actual Grouse hunters left in Pa.

Way more Deer, Turkey and Bear hunters than Grouse hunters now.

all the best,

16gaugeDavis,

Yes we use to hunt the western part of NY almost every year when the Pa Grouse season ended. The snow was sometimes very deep and it could become very dangerous on some parts of the NY mountains. Took a header myself one snowy afternoon and hurt my gun arm pretty badly. Was stove up for about 2 weeks.

Ny is close to our Potter County log cabin and we bought a NY license most every year,
it gave the dogs a lot more time in the Grouse woods, especially late in the season.
There was some real fine Grouse hunting at one time in the western part of NY.
When the Grouse numbers fell drastically we quit going into NY to hunt. Besides that I hate giving a gun control state any license money to help support their gun control agenda. However this next Grouse season I may be back in the Ny Grouse woods, because we have lost so much of our Pa Grouse season, and NY is close and I want to once again hunt in the snow covered mountains. There are parts of our Pa mountains that run right up against the NY mountains and you need a GPS to tell you which state you are really hunting in. Usually nobody around for miles in that section of the forest and there use to be some real good Grouse numbers in that area also.

Looks like next year I will purchase an NY hunting license once again, now that our Pa Grouse season has lost a complete month in Grouse hunting time. If my legs are in good shape I will definitely purchase a WV hunting license also. The weather in WV is real nice during the 2nd season!

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave
