In another thread someone loaded Remington RGL, Federal and Cheddite hulls with different wads and then commented on recoil, based on each hull. What I tried has nothing to do with recoil.
The subject got my interest (and I was a little bored), to see what would happen if I reloaded all three hulls with the exact same components, including powder amount. Powder and shot payloads were hand weighed. Crimps on all hulls were finished with an OMV crimp finisher at .065" depth. All hulls were once fired. The load was based on data from the Hodgdon website, using the RGL hull. I made it an even 21.0 grains of W572, just to keep it simple. I used Winchester hulls made by or similar to Cheddite rather than Cheddite, as I didn't have any once fired Cheddite hulls.

21.0 Grains Winchester 572
Gualandi BRG16/21 (SG16) wad
1 oz. lead shot.
Remington hull results. (Hodgdon Data using 21.0 grains W572 - 1,250 FPS (Appox)
Average - 1,296 FPS
Hi - 1,305 FPS
Lo - 1,283 FPS
ES- 22 FPS
Sd - 9 FPS
Federal hull results. (Hodgdon Data using 20.9 grains W572 - 1,220 FPS)
Average - 1,206 FPS
Hi - 1,1,227 FPS
Lo - 1,180 FPS
ES- 37 FPS
Sd - 15 FPS
Winchester hull results. (Hodgdon Data using 21.2 grains W572 - 1,220 FPS)
Average - 1,227 FPS
Hi - 1,238 FPS
Lo - 1,211 FPS
ES- 27 FPS
Sd - 11 FPS
At least with this set of components, the Federal hulls produced less velocity than the Winchester hulls, the Winchester definitely have more volume, as I measured it to be sure. The difference was 44 grains more #9 shot in the Winchester hull, about 50 pellets. So much for thinking that total volume of a hull will always affect performance in the same way. Sometimes yes and sometimes no, it depends on more than just hull volume. The other item I noticed was I hit the velocity with the Federal and Winchester hull almost perfectly, but with the Remington hull my loads were almost 50 FPS faster. Also notice that the .065" crimp depth didn't increase the velocity of the loads using the Federal and Winchester hulls, but it probably did with the Remington hulls.
A pic of the crimps.
