All:

The place I’m lucky enough to be allowed to shoot doves is an organic potato farm. Even though I shoot around the edges of the fields, for years I’ve been feeling maybe just a little bit guilty about spewing lead and plastic wads around the place. Also, there is a pond in the middle of one of the fields I’ve avoided for this very reason and would like to check out this year; so I’m afraid the following is not completely altruistic…..

I want to load up some “low impact” (environmentally speaking) shells. I’ll use bismuth and I know there are felt and cardboard overshot, filler and, I’m assuming, over-powder cards available form Ballistic Products. So:

1. Anybody out there tried this sort of thing before?
2. Is 7 ½ Bismuth about the same as 7 ½ lead shot? I’d guess it is good enough.
3. What goes over the powder, what goes over the shot?
4. What I want is a 1 oz load of 7 ½’s at about 1200 fps.

I have Cheedite, Fiocchi and Black Rem hulls, SG16 and R16 wads and Win 209 and Fiocchi primers on hand. I typically use Green Dot but have some Universal Clays laying about somewhere. I’ll be shooing out of them out of the Merkel 1620.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I send the resultant shells off for velocity and pressure testing.

Thanks

The impact of one guy shooting would be insignificant to the point of not worthy of letting it bother you.You could walk out and retrieve the wads I guess -or train rover to do it Wink
