have been wanting to pick up a 16ga, used to shoot a sxs Forgeron 16 when I was young...
Have had several choices, but currently have a choice of a browning superlight 28", and a citori grade VI to choose from(rough life I know).

Are these about the best choices in modern 16's, are there others withing financial reason to consider? does the grade 6 weight considerably more than the superlight?....
Thanks all....

I'll second that along with a 47E to back it up.

But if you are looking at those 2 only, take the Grade VI Citori. If looking for a nice O/U, think about finding a Citori Feather in 16 and you'll have one sweet O/U. But no, you can't have mine. Razz

I don't think you could go wrong with either a Merkel or a Citori. I just depends on how you like your barrels, stacked or two by. For me in my opinion, and only for me, and nobody else in particular ( disclaimer )I would pick the Citori superlight or a Lightning model for a gun in the 1400-1700 range. I'd go with a Merkel 1620 for a gun in the 3000-4000 range, just for the cash to return value hedge If I was going to shoot the gun a lot.

The above disclaimer is a hedge against the ensuing pie fight that is about to break out. Now if you'll all pardon me, I'll going to go find a table to duck under with a slice of coconut cream to dine on, and a banana cream for ammo as a hedge. Very Happy I like hedges. Wink

You can also find modern Merkel OU's, although the currently made ones will cost you even more than a 1620. But modern, used 200E's do pop up, usually for somewhat more than a basic Citori but less than a 1620. The good thing about the Merkels, either sxs or OU, is that most of them have the correct number of triggers: one for each barrel.Smile

Browning is making their BPS pump in 16ga. http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/firearms/detail.asp?cat_id=012&type_id=211&value=011B&cattype=012211

B. Rizzini makes O\U in 16 also. http://rizziniusa.com/

But it's still a PUMP gun. Sorry, but it just "ain't" in the same class. Wink

I agree with 16gg as far as saving the $$ if you aren't bothered by how your barrels lie. Smile

But Larry makes the best point of all, the Merkels have the right number of triggers for a 2 barrel gun. Very Happy
Even if I DID have to order my 1620 because I wanted the 2 triggers with a pistol grip. Wink

I don't have Merkel or Citori pockets, so I'm leaning toward a Dehaan 16 sGr Custom.

Regards,
Charles

I have a Merkel 1620 and a Citori 16 ga. O/U and like them both, but neither of them "walk on water", nor does any gun we might buy make up for deficiencies in gun handling, stance, swing, poor physical conditioning, etc. I expect I'll shoot just about as well with the modestly-priced 16 ga. BPS I've ordered (when and if it comes in) as with the former two guns I own...and therein lies a moral---but I'm probably too far gone as a gun addict to heed it...

Great thanks for the input, my old 16 was a sxs, so that is why I have held off buying.....I was offered a citori superlight for 1700 NIB, and there are plenty of other Brownings poping up these days in 16.....Can't go wrong with a browning.

I have also held off the Merkel because i am not familiar with them.
the discussion has made it more appealing to look for a sxs............Merkel will be the first stop.
Any other suggestions???

well........(here we go again), if you shop around, there are some fabulous, superlightweight french and belgian side by sides out there, that are amazingly strong for their lightness (often 6 pounds or less)..... stronger than anything classic American, except the Model 21, and they can be bought really inexpensively at times, like $500 (even less)-$1500, depending on condition, maker, etc....

good luck, have fun shopping...

Duncan

A friend of mine bought he CZ, I think it's the Ringneck?? in 16ga and loves it.
Very plain wood, fit to finish is ok, but it was under a $1000 and goes bang.
