They are now $125/5000 locally for the Winchester----Time to switch to the new 209 sized imports. Why have the U.S. makers priced themselves out of the market??????????This time last year they were $100/5000---There can be NO way to justify a 25% increase |

Can't speak to the why but I suspect the imports will take a big jump when the next batch arrives off the boat.
I shoot 7.62x39 in an SKS and the (formerly) cheap Wolf steel cased ammo took a big increase last year.
If you have the cash reserves now might be the time to lay in a couple of cases.
IIRC, Gamaliel is selling domestic 209's for $140+ per 5K. |

I too am considering new primers depending on cost and reccomendations from those who have tried them.
I have used w209's exclusively for the past 36 years with the exception of the occasional few boxes using the other well known American brands. I like the w209 and I am about ready to make a bulk order, and if there is a substantial price increase I will consider a new alternative if more economical. I know you get what you pay for. So...does anyone have any reccomendations for a primer closely equal to a w209 in sise and performance that is any cheaper?
I don't want to go to the Fiocchi because I don't want to stretch the primer pocket. I've heard Cheddite's might be ok.
Thanks in advance for any help. |

Shipping is part of the cost. How much more are you paying for gas this year. WV added a 5% increase on the taxes for fuel. And China is buying all the metal it can at a price it wants to pay. |

Clays-up 100% in 2 years
Shot- up 40% in 2 yrs.
primers -up 40% in 2 yrs.
powder- inch by miserable inch it's rising
...and we're supposed to believe this is all about gas prices? Right.

So I ask again. Is there a primer that will work in W209 recipes that is significantly cheaper that any of you guys can reccomend?
Thanks. |

Haven't tried them but Hodgdon says the Nobelsport 209 can be sub'd for the W209. Gamaliel, last I looked, had the Nobelsports at $95/5000K IIRC. |

I've replaced all my Win209 primers with Fiocchi616 primers.
I specifically contacted Hodgdon and Alliant regarding a safe exchange and was told I could do so.
If you want to be super-safe reduce your powder charge by .5 grains.
If your pressures are in the 8,000 - 10,000 PSI range, I wouldn't be concerned.
I also spoke to Tom Armbrust a couple of weeks ago regarding the Fiocchis and the Win209s and he said from his data and testing, the Fiocchi is typically a "cooler" primer.
Will it stretch the primer pocket. It might. But, why would you switch to anything else when you can get the Fiocchis so cheap. |

I'm new to reloading so I've bought a couple of books and downloaded and prionte enough to fill another book. Everything I've seen shows thw w209 primer a little hotter then the Fiocchi comparing the loads with everything else the same. I'm starting out with Fiocchi hulls with the Fiocchi primer allready in them. I'll probably then try the winchester hulls as I've bought up evry box of winchester 16 gauge shells in town. |
