What's available and/or what have you used? |

I use one similar to what Galazan has but with shell holders on my deer rifle. It's black neoprene and fits tight. You can shim under it if you wanted to raise the comb ht. |

I've had one of the sorbothane ones from Kick-eez on my Beretta 687 SPII 12 ga. for a few years. Minimal thickness, eases the bite. |

nutcase-
I never looked at these products as facial protection, but rather a means to get a consistant face weld / alignment to an ill fitting stock.
If your face is being bruised, it is more than likely a gun mount or gun fit problem. |

If the comb of your shotgun is biting your face, its probably too thin and is not contoured round enough. A combination of a sharp drop to heel from the start of the comb and one of these knife edged comb tops is murder to shoot. I could never understand why anyone would put such a stiock style on a shotgun. Its like trying to rest your cheek pocket on the edge of a two by four.
Sometimes a padded piece of leather propery padded and shaped to a more rounded contour will help a great deal. However, the leather pad can't be too thick at the top so as to raise the comb high enough to raise your point of impact more than 60/40. The trick is to widen out the contour on the on side to form a more rounded platform to rest your cheek pocket on. This will eliminate eliminate the edge that is biting into your face. However, you might also need more cast to compensate for the horizontal shift the pad might cause.
Sometimes the only answer is to recarve and recontour the comb or even cut and splice in a seperate piece of walnut to afford the wood to do it. You can cover the insert with a nicely stained piece of close grained leather for a beautiful effect. If done right, its very classy looking. |

A lot of us old guys used to use a peice of moleskin. You know the same stuff you put on a corn on your foot. Just cut it to size and it's cheap too. I did notice last year at the Grand that Sims Vibration laboratiries made something you could cut to shape and put on the stock. I don't know anyone who has tried it though. I might just buy a peice of moleskin, it always did work. |
