I am looking to find out a little more about a family SXS, 16ga.

Markings are;
Fotune Vorm J.P Shuer & Sohn Suhl.
Special -Gewefir (four circles like an olympic symbol) Lauf-Stahl

My father purchased the gun in the early 50's I believe.

Any background, heritage, thoughts on quality would be appreciated. This gun will not be for sale as it is viewed as a part of the family.

thanks Al.

Al,

I believe you have a Sauer. It should be J.P. Sauer and sohn. Sauer has made doulbe guns for years prior to WW II.

Contact Larry Brown either through this board or the Shooting SPortsman Bulletin Board. Larry has vast experience and a huge amount of knowledge about the JP Sauer guns.

Remove the barrels. Look on water table (the action flats). There should be a 3 or 4 digit stamp. That would be a date code. Once you know when it was made, you just have to figure out by who. Prior to WWII, J.P. Sauers were made by the Sauer family. Post WWII, there were East German as well as West German Sauers. As Suhl, Germany's gun making capitol was in East German (communist) control, after the war, several names resurfaced... Simpson, Merckel, Sauer, Geco, etc.

I may be wrong, but "Fortuna" may be the East German version. It really doesn't matter. They are fine made guns. And strong as a bank vault.
