I shoot at Point Mugu NAWS as a civilian member. Great place to shoot. We are always looking for more military members but it's hard to get the young guys involved.

At the present time we are actively looking for current military members, active duty reserves, retirees and/or their dependents who are trap and skeet shooters or would like to learn to shoot either game, now is the time to join us. There will be no membership fee for 2007 or 2008, the range is right on the beach and there is duck hunting on the base for military personnel. It's hard to beat the location and there is an RV park about 1/2 mile from the range on base, with its own private beach. We also have a couple of loaner guns if they don't have their own.

If you fit into one of the above categories or know someone who does and they live in the Ventura County/Southern California area please tell them about us.

If you or someone you know is interested please e-mail Ron Means, our club secretary, at ron@rhmeans.com and he will give you more detailed information. Remember, this is for active military, active duty reserves, retirees and/or their dependents only.

This is a legitimate offer, not one of these phony Viagra things that keep, no pun intended, popping up from time to time. All we want to do is boost our military membership and hopefully keep the range open.

Well if I was on the Left coast and exmilitary, instead of just a brat, I'd sign up.

I appreciate that. I don't even qualify as a brat.

Sounds like a familiar problem at many military facilities...

The Rod & Gun club days started fading in the 1970's and 80's when many quit stocking and selling guns. I didn't understand why that happened when it did, when i asked it was something about not enough sales, etc. . I don't know for sure , but i think they were "centralized" for better "management", providing more civil service/NAF employment positions and fewer services. A few stayed busy, with a lot of retiree and civilian support.

Since i don't intend to ever again live in California or east of the 100th meridian, i'm not much help to you, except to say i hope you find some way to get the younger active duty people involved.

just my opinion/experience, your may vary

Good luck

rayb

Art, I would shoot with you but I live in Illinois. I do shoot at the Scot AFB gun club as a retired military person. They allow civilians to shoot also but it seems to be a pain in the but to get on base without a sticker. The manager told me that last year was the first year they lost money and it looks about the same for this year. Young people just don't shoot much. I guess they have other things to occupy their time. I was watching a Trap shoot the other day, mostly older men. I hope that isn't a sign for the future of shooting sports.

It's a rare day when some young sailors show up at the range and want to shoot. I think that they have so many other things to do that shooting clays just doesn't work out for them. They can surf on base, they can go to so many places off base for recreation and there are quite a few who have families so their limited dollars are stretched even thinner. It's too bad.

I'm in the Marine Reserves and if I wasn't in North Carolina I'd love to come shoot. When time and money allow I find shoot trap, a couple of magazines at the local pistol range or from a couple hundred yards with a rifle, any shooting at all really.....its a great way to waste an afternoon!

75bronco, tell any of your buddies that get stationed out here to come on out any Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday or Sunday and shoot with us. We're in Ventura County, right on the beach, good weather, great shooting.
