I just picked up a Stevens 770 pump, 16 ga 2 3/4". I can find absolutely no information on this gun in either google searches or gun forum searches. Does anyone know anything about this gun? Great, decent, or junk? Its a nice old gun with honest wear, I'd guess about 80%. I only paid $149 for it so if I over paid, it couldn't have been by too much. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, I'm a new member here. I've been reading the forum for several months. My first gun, back in the early 70's, was a 16ga H&R single given to me by my grandpa. It had been his brother's gun. You know what they say about first love, and I've always been fond of 16's. But up until this year, that old H&R has been my only 16. I've greatly increased my 16ga arsenal this spring. Besides the above mentioned Stevens, I also picked up a 1942 Ithaca 37, and today or tomorrow my new Dehaan S0 SXS with english stock and dual triggers should arrive. I dug out the new Lee loader that I stashed in my parents basement in the mid 80's, so I'm ready to go. Life is good.

You could probably date it.
Look for a small oval containing a number AND a letter.
Somtimes on the barrel, or near the loading gate.
I think it is just a Stevens 77 . Why the 770, I don't know. Maybe the 820 was in the Catalog at the same time and they thought all models should have 3 digits?
I own a couple similar guns, the Savage 30 and a 69RXL.
Savage 67's are also very similar.
I don't think you got ripped off if it works.
The best Stevens pump in my opinion is a 620 16 ga.
It is my favorite.
