i'm building a house and will have to live in a hotel for about 6 months. in a bit of a quandary as to what to do w/ the guns. i've a safe that i'll be storing and one of the storage guys said to put them in the safe and in the back of the storage space and put my boxes on top and around it. any of you all ever had to store your guns for a situation like this? figured i might call 1 of the local gun shops. thanx, rick |

Certainly a safe is your best bet. Isn't the storage space secure?
You don't say what part of the world you inhabit, but a safe heater to drive off any humidity wouldn't hurt. |

You don't have a good friend or relative in the area that could store them for you? I wouldn't leave any of my guns in a storage building, safe or no safe. |

I'd be worried about humidity/temperature damage. Hard to say without knowing where you are. Here in S Fl this time of year, you might as well toss 'em in the ocean as put em in a storage lockup.
I've known several gun shops that take guns in for storage. Might be an option to look into.

If they are insured you might want to check to see what the insurance carrier has to say about it. |

When I had to leave home for awhile, I left my guns with a good friend. I would not trust a storage space. You could allways ship them all up for me to take care of. Just kidding. I'd leave them with a friend. |

well, i live in louisville, the humidity capital of the world and i've pretty much ruled out the safe in the storage compartment idea. all my friends who own guns have a full safeful as do i. they'd let me keep 'em in a closet i guess. my flaming liberal brother in law wets his pants when he sees blued steel. i'll call around to the gun shops, i guess, or maybe some of the cold storage places. thanx, rick |

If the storage room is the only option, and, if you own a quality safe, get some of those de-humidity canisters. Cabelas sells the type in a steel canister. You put them in the oven after the lid changes color. One large canister should be enough, so, use two! Then, every month put in two fresh ones.
Summers on Long Island can get rather humid. I have a Goldenrod, and four of Cabelas largest canisters. I swap my canisters a bit more frequently. I also set reminders on my computer, and palm pilot. The goldenrod should be enough, but what if the electric goes out?
As you can guess, I'm a big believer in redundancy.
Another option... instead of a "U-store-it" type of storage company, look into a commercial bonded storage company.
Good luck. |

Put your safe and guns in one of your friends homes.
You are going to have to move it twice anyway. |

Or... just ship your safe to my home. That way you won't ever have to move it again.
P.S. tell me the combination... that way I can make sure nothing fell over in transit. |

If you don't need access to 'em while in storage, a PVC pipe w/ 2 end caps and desiccant should do the job.....
