I think I read an article once upon a time that disected recoil and how to manage it. Too bad I didn't save it. The specific question, posed to me by two newer shooters, is how to reduce recoil to the cheek. Is a longer stock the appropriate answer?
Thanks,

Unless the shooter has an unusual shaped face or chubby cheeks, adding length to the stock will most likely help. UNLOAD the gun; stand in front of them and have them look directly at your eye. Have them mount the gun without moving their head, bringing the comb up to their cheek. At this point, they should be still looking at your eye and also straight down the rib or barrel.Do this a few times and you'll likely see if there is a gun mount problem or if there is an awkward length or twist to the gun stock as they have it mounted. A 1" recoil pad takes the bite out of many ill fitting stocks that are too short . The last thing we want a new shooter to do is raise their head in anticipation of recoil. Hope this helps out. |
