delco: The Savage model 220 single barrel was made from 1938 through 1965. US gun makers 'proofed' their barrels independently using over-pressure loads. If the gun is in good working order and the barrel is free of pitting or previous honing, it would be appropriate to use 1 oz 2 1/2 dram (1165 fps) 'Game Loads.'

So would this be proofed to a SAAMI spec of
Cartridge Maximum Average pressure as indicated here.
10 gauge 11,000 (all)
12 gauge 11,5000 (all but 3 1/2" mag)
12 gauge 3 1/2" mag 14,000
16 gauge (11,500 (all)
20 Gauge 12,000 (all)
28 gauge 12,500 (all)
.410 Bore 2 1/2" 12,500
.410 Bore 3" 13,500
And if I look at my other guns does one of these characters represent this?
So when I work up loads for this gun I should never exceed 11,499 psi.
Or does a proof mark literally indicate what pressure I shouldn't exceed. |

Delco: those are the SAAMI (US as opposed to CIL which is UK and the Continent) max pressures for the various gauges. US makers marked their guns 'Proof Tested' to indicate THE BARRELS were safe within those parameters. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THE GUN IS NOW SAFE AT THOSE PRESSURES nor if those pressures wouldn't loosen the action nor if the recoil generated by shells with those pressures would not crack the wood of the stock. Your Savage is a 'modern' gun, but it's important to use appropriate loads for which the gun was originally designed.
Your gun was not designed to shoot the new Federal Wing Shok High Velocity 1 3/8 oz at 1500 fps and 1 5/8 oz at 1350 fps loads, even if they are within SAAMI specs. Save those for a Benelli SBE |
