I'm getting pretty fed up with the lack of availability and high cost of 16 ga. ammo. I'm thinking of getting a 12 or possibly a 20 and stoping the insanity.
Anywho, checked Wal-Mart, Dicks and Cabelas with the following results:
Wal-Mart only carries Remington Express Long Range 1 1/8 oz @ 1295 fps.
This comes in either #4, 6 or 7 1/2. They had #6 and 7 1/2 when I was in the store. Their normal prices are $11.50 per box. Luckily they had a HUGE sale and I was able to pick up 8 boxes of 7 1/2 for $5.00 ea. plus a box of #6 at regular prices which was all the 16 they had.
Dick's had Remington Express Long Range #4 at $12.00 per box so I passed.
Cabela's had Federal Game Shok #7 1/2 at $7.99 per box and Fiocci Golden Pheasant #5 and 7 1/2 at $13.99 per box. |

What is going to be your "other gun" main purpose? Upland game, sporting clays, ducks, or home defence? |

The main purpose would be to avoid involuntary confinement in a padded room after the inevitable outburst in the sporting goods deparment of some store that didn't have 16 ga. shells.
Currently I use it for crows and upland. I would also use it for clays IF I COULD FIND SOME SHELLS. ARGHH! |

Romperstomper you are suffering from our good friend TJC's obsession with grabbing up all of the 16 gauge ammunition in the North Eastern United States and South Eastern provinces of Canada.
My recommendation is you follow him around and find out where he is finding all of this stuff and devise a plan to beat him to some of it. |

You can always plan in advance and shop online. Companies like Graff's, and Cascade will ship right to your door. RST is a great firm to deal with, especially in 2 1/2" sizes.
On another note ... is the new Connecticut Cabelas open yet? As far as I know, it was supposed to open last Friday. |

See the thread on Imperial 16ga. shells. They don't get any cheaper then that. |

Now if some of the other constant complainers about ammo availability would give up and do the same. If walking into a store and having a huge selection of ammo is important to you then the 16 IS NOT for you. So, Romperstomper, you are making the right decision. Go for a 12. Ammo everywhere. |

I came across a case of Remington GL167 (7 1/2) for $3.98/box at Dick's in Manchester. It was the only case they had. DARN.... |

Once that case sells, the computer automatically orders another to restock it. Keep going back. Soon, you'll figure out their schedule. |

Thanks for the heads up on the ordering process. I will check back with them again some time. It just would have been nice to have found more cases at that price at that time. |

Drove to Canton... Pay dirt!!!
Took 2 flats home and there were plenty left. Mostly 7 1/2 they also had some 6. Anywho, that should last a bit.

Since I don't have to make the switch, and probably could not be forced to at this point, I'll stand pat with my little collection of 16 ga guns (and also with enough componants squirreled away to reload all the 16 ga. ammo I'll ever need for the rest of my shooting life.) To paraphrase Mr T, "Pity the fool who don't have a 16 gauge. |
