I own a copy of the January 6, 1960 Remington Ammunition Price List.
Between shot sizes and dram equiv. they offer about 30 total 16 gauge loads. Items of interest:
The still offered 2 9/16 inch shell in most loadings.
only one 16 gauge buckshot load in #1 buck
a 16 gauge scatter load was offered in #8 only
16 gauge target loads for trap and skeet were offered but only in #9
the retail price per box ranged $2.50 to $3.40.
At the same time there were 46 total 12 gauge loads offered and 26 total 20 gauge loads, 28 gauge 6 loads offered and 410 - 13 loads. |

They are now down to 10 offerings, 1 slug, 2 steel shot and 7 lead shot. These include 3 shot sizes in the Game Loads, 3 in the Express Long Range, and 1 in the Pheasant Load. Yes it would be nice to have a little more variety, including more light loads for targets, and a good nontoxic alternative, but this really aint too bad for a gauge that has been "dead" since shortly after that 1960 catalog came out!
Also, many of you can find the RGLs at less than $4/box available locally to you and most can find them for around $5 mail order.
Question--what is $2.50, the lowest priced load in 1960, now adjusted for inflation?
Answer $16.04 !!!
Looked at another way, that $4 box of game loads if shown as adjusted back to 1960 $$ is the equivalent of $0.62, not the $2.50 shown as the lowest price then.
We really don't have it too bad, but if the price of lead in the world market stays as high or goes up, next year we might be paying almost as much per box as they did in "the good old days".

I agree. As ammo goes we have it pretty good, and cheap too. I personally feel that a good 1 oz load of 71/2 or 8 pretty much covers the upland game needs with 6'sa for rabbits and squirrels. 11/8 express loads are good for the phesant hunters and western hunters . As for waterfowl since the nontoxic requirements hit the 12 is really the only way to go. so I don't feel too short changed in the ammo department as long as the stores carry the 1 oz loads. |
